I've seen/heard conflicting info on how many years of active duty I am required to serve under the SWCC challenge contract. I looked at my contract and I found it a bit confusing. It says I must be in the Navy 4 years active and 4 as inactive reserve, and then an additional 24 months for an advanced technical field. I thought I had to serve 36 months after the completion of SWCC training. To be honest I never thought about it because it wouldn't have effected my decision, but I am curious to have some clarity on what my obligations are.

Where I think the confusion may lie is that the 36 months of OBLISERV is for those who are currently active. You must have that time left in the Navy, or be able to extend/re-enlist to fulfill that requirement, once you finish SWCC school. You, from what I understand, are not yet in the military. Therefore, your enlistment obligations reflect the standard enlistment requirements for a recruit (4 yrs active, 4 yrs reserve), plus the extended time to allow for SWCC training.
Hope that helps :)

It should be 6 years active and 2 years inactive. A normal enlistment is 4 years, but in order to do NSW you are obligated to do another 2 years active and 2 years inactive. If you do not make it through SWCC and are dropped you will only be obligated to 4 years. This is how I understand it to be.

That may be your understanding, but he IS reading that straight from his contract, so he may have a bit more info than what you have. :)

My contract says the same thing. Ultimately you will have 6 years "active" duty i.e. SWCC school and on-the-job training lasting approx. 2 years if all goes well. Then 2 years inactive duty to fulfill your total 8 year obligation. And from what i understand if you don't make it through training you still owe 6 years active duty. I could very well be wrong but this is how i was told by my recruiter and somewhere else on this board.

ucf is right. they have you sign up for two more years a total of six. this is so you can fulfill the 36 month obligated service apon completion of swcc school.
