I'm in need of a new pair of sunglasses, but before I spend a lot of money I would like your thoughts. I want a pair that will serve me well any and everywhere I go, whether it be around town or the ME.
The Oakley Juliets fit my face extremely well. The downside, however, is that they lack interchangeable lenses and they aren't offered through Oakley's Standard Issue -- Gov't Sales Program. Basically that means the lenses are not up to Gov't ANSI standards for impact resistance, optical clarity, and UV protection. Anyone have experience with the Juliets in combat?
As far as frames available through the SI program, the Minutes probably fit my face the best, but again, they lack the interchangeable lenses. Are interchangeable lenses that important?
Any thoughts, suggestions, or personal/second-hand testimonies would be greatly appreciated.

We were issued the Oakley RazrBlades when I was there----they no longer make that model unfortunately.
These http://www.revisioneyewear.com/hellfly.html are NICE.

Oakleys exceed the ANSI requirements but the Juliets are not on the list because of price and practbility. Try the 20's. They are versitle. Half jackets have the interchangable lenses as well. For the quick change ya can't go wrong with the M frames. They are the NEW "Blades" Sea...

Razor blades were worse. M's have 20 plus lenses though and the razor lenes is atleast low profile enough to look kinda cool. I prefer the 20's myself.

I mean---sunglasses have to look cool, right?
Smiths are damn nice too, if a guy needs the interchangeable lenses.

dfc, do all Oakley's exceed ANSI requirements or just those in the SI program? Agreed, the price of the Juliets is steep, but why aren't they practical? Just the price or is there a durability issue?
To everyone: How important is the ability to change lenses?

In my experience, changeable lenses are great-----if you like scratched lenses.
Just find a lens that works for you---not too dark, not too light, and NOT polarized.

All. The Juliets are heavy and the metal is hot in the heat. I had a pair. They flew off everywhere or were too hot to put on if left in the sun.
My lens changing was taking them off and on. Colors are for the gooch shooters on TV.

Great information so far. Thanks.
Why not polarized?

Sea, just curious, what is wrong with polarized? No need for it?

Polarized glasses will not only show what looks like a hologram to your eye(in certain lighting conditions) , but you won't be able to see the screen of certain electronic toys---like a hand-held GPS.
Get your fishin glasses on and play with your GPS a while, you shall see----easier, grab a calculator and walk outside with it, see if you can see the numbers.

The sunglasses that Sea pointed out look awesome ( http://www.revisioneyewear.com/hellfly.html ). They are usually around $99, which I thought was a good price. Found them on a site for around $75, might get some just for everyday use.

Right now I have in the amber lenses for two reasons. I'm too lazy to find my case with the black ones, and they provide a nice mixture of protection while not beign too dark to observe detail.

Sea, thanks for posting about the revision hellfly sunglasses man. I recieved mine today after reading your post and looking at the site, and they are some awesome looking glasses. I hike and do all kind of outdoor stuff, so I needed something rough, but that is also cool enough to wear on a day out with my girl, and just like you said they are NICE. The SeaSpectre has good taste. Thanks man.

We were issued Wiley-Xs for our deployments. We were issued a couple pairs, these the older Romer model and the XL1s I think.
Take note: Something I have never liked about Oakleys until recent models like the half jackets, is when they rest on the bridge of your nose like the 20s and the 5s the bottoms of the lenses tend to fog up. I've always had a problem with them until my new pair of half jackets. I think it's because they simply rest on your nose with no raise, but the newer half jackets have the bridgepiece.
Some things to think about. But to the best of my knowledge if you are going on deployment, you will in all likelihood be issued a pair of sunglasses. We were issued goggles and glasses.

They dont issue them, but the most incredible sunglasses I've ever had are Maui Jim's. My Step Son Jason gave me a pair of them a year ago. The technology behind those sunglasses is incredible. This particular pair runs about $275.00 retail, If he hadnt given them to me I would NEVER have spent that kind of money for sunglasses. Back in Florida he worked at a high end shop that sold them and got all kinds of promo's.
I can go fishing with these and look down into the water with no problem at all. It cuts almost 98%+ glare out competely without darkening the world around me. Just incredible, hard to find words. There is something like 9 layers of glass substrate. I use to think you were paying for the name, on some of them you are. But with Maui Jim's you are buying an incredible pair of glasses. But, with an average cost around $150.00 to 300.00+ I wouldnt take them into a combat zone :(

For my deployment to the box the Navy issued me ESS sunglasses. Then when we linked up with Army National Gaurd unit I was issued a pair of Wiley- X's and two(2) pairs of Oakley M-Frames w/dark and clear lenses.
I do not recommend polarized lenses. My personal sunglasses that I took over were Arnette's with polarized lenses and you cannot read GPS with polarized lenses...
I just recently bought a pair of black on black Oakley Gascans for everyday use, and Oakley SI Half Jacket XLJ with all the lenses for range time.
Yeah, so I have a nice collection of sunglasses now...

Like I said, If he hadnt given them to me I would never have shelled out the money to buy them thats for sure. A buddy of mine has some Oakleys, they are great, I had him put mine on and he was amazed at how much glare they cut out without sacrificing light. I told him you ought to see how they look down into the water!

Oakleys with iridium lenses (not sure of type etc). Again, expensive but very nice and work a treat!

For years I was under the (incorrect) impression that expensive sunglasses were just that - Expensive because of the name. But the Oakleys, Maui Jims (and the other good ones of the world) are indeed "Worth" it. I'm spoiled with my Maui's - but whether its Oakely or what have you - you got some GOOD shades.

My last time to the sandbox, I took Oakley M-frames with a polarized lens and a clear lens. They worked really well for me.
They issued the wiley-x goggle type sunglass (i'm sorry i don't know the type)to us. The guys that wore them had issues with the rubberish seal around the eye pieces coming off and they fogged up really bad.

Yep MFrames to the trick. The Wileys are a MF to keep unfogged. I think the Oakley SWAT goggles worked the best.
