My buddy is about to get some fins soon and we are going to start some distance bay swims.

I wanted to ask anyone who knew or preferably completed BUD/s if Buoyancy and floating on top of the water while attempting to do the sidestroke with fins in the ocean would get you in trouble down the road or at BUD/s.

Just wondering cause i float above the water alot doing the sidestroke and i know that in the pool they teach you to go just under the water a few inches so that you dont splash.

if this is an issue should i add just a couple of pounds to a weightbelt so that i am underwater as is taught in the pool? Or should i just enjoy the buoyancy on long distance swims?

Would love to hear form somone who has completed BUD/s but any knowledgable advice would help.

Thanks alot.

you dont need to worry about the bouyancy of fins you will not notice the difference...with a wet suit yes but not with just fins...work on staying streamline and you will glide through the water and not have a problem

Most fins are made neutrally buoyant in seawater. They have no effect at all when it comes to that.

Like jared1989 kindly explained, only a wetsuit or a Buoyancy Control Device will affect your buoyancy.

With fins, you can still swim under the surface without any problems. Just turn your body to breath.

With fins, your legs are the primary source of propulsion, and fins give you extra 'push'. That may feel strange at first, but get used to it. You need to have strong ankles for BUD/S. Good luck.
