First off, the Marines are an entire branch of the military, the SEALs are part of the Naval Special Warfare group. SEALs train way harder than the marines--they're special operations. The Marines do have their own special operations group which I've heard is almost as rigorous as BUD/S (Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training--a 6 month course) known as Marine Force Recon. In short, you can't compare SEALs and Marines, because the nature of their work is much, much different. As for the numbers, I have no hard evidence, although I've heard that its roughly a 35-40% mortality rate among the SEALs, but don't quote me on that. I've also heard its about 85-90%, but that simply doesn't make sense since it takes a minimum of 2 years to fully train a SEAL and I can't see the military wasting all that training on a single mission. Hopefully someone else will have more accurate information on that. If you want more information on the training SEALs go through **** Couch has several good books on the topic, the first of which is 'The Warrior Elite: the forging of SEAL class 228' that's very informative. 'Lone Survivor' by Marcus Luttrel is another very good story of his experience--his team was wiped out in the mountain region between Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2005. Its a very good book, and it demonstrates the kind of men SEALs are.

A better comparison would be to compare Marine Recon with SEALS. It is sort of misleading to show statistics considering that marines fill up all kind of jobs that will never see combat and whenever the SEALS have a job to do it's most likely going to be a pretty hairy situation. It's your project though, just an opinion.

Whoever told you that SEALs have a 40% mortality rate is a moron. No SOF in the world could survive with that sort of retention.
Also, this is a pretty disrespectful and f*cked up topic in the first place. If the thread starter is worried about sacrifice, then this isn't the right job for you.
