I'll be enlisting Under SEAL Challenge June and will do ALMOST direct shipping. At this point i still don't have the CSS mastered but have good core endurance. I can only swim 5-8 hours every Saturday between now and May when i might be able to swim every day. What kind of swimming workout should i do besides practise CSS to make every second of the 5-8 count? At this point i really don't care about pain to the slightest and will do whatever anyone suggests if it will give me the most maximum amount of output. I'll swim all the 8 hours non stop if that gaurantees no overtraining injuries and good fast progress.
Another thing, i saw a thread about flutter kicks with a mask full of water. I don't understand fully how it works. Every mask i've seen covers your eyes and nose, so how does water go down your throat through your nose? can anyone give me a name of a mask or a link, that i might see what the mask looks like so i can get one to practise such an evolution?

dude, stay away from water in the mask training, underwater breath hold training and 8 hours of swimming - overtraining. work your way up to getting good freestyle and breaststroke and CSS endurance. i have posted a link where you can get swim workouts from other people who swim a lot. you cna get done what you need to get done in an hour or two.

We have the instructional DVD for CSS in our online store. Since you have limited pool time this video will get you going correctly so your time will be spent working on correct technique.
The name of the game is endurance. I would go +5,000 meters

Why do you have to ship right away? I personally wouldn't rely on the Great Lakes program to make me in BUD/s shape, but rather to make me in "better BUD/s shape."
Swimming is very technical and everyone needs practice. What's your 500 time? If your time is good, you might as well start off and work up to swimming 3000 yards with fins.

I live in Virginia and it's pretty cold out here. Just the other week I was walking in 14 degrees weather to the gym in a t-shirt and shorts, by the time i got to the gym i was shaking and everything was numb. Due to the weather i need an inside pool and the closest inside pool is 12 miles away. I could run the distance but my legs would brake, car is the only way, I don't have a liscense and Saturday turns out to be the only time when i can get a ride up there.
So I can only do 2 hours of swimming for the best results?
I'm not considering Boot Camp to be of any help, just an obsticle. I need to do direct shipping or close to that after I graduate. And as for why. Lets just say the past 2 years haven't exactly been a picnic.

I didn't say boot camp, I said the new prep program.
Your last two years haven't been a picnic? How so?
You're 16, you should have friends who are getting their licenses so try to bum a ride off them. Or else, get a bike. 12 miles on a bike is nothing, regardless of the weather.

I used to use the bike last year until it broke....and i don't make enough working at a lowly food place to get another because i need the money for other stuff(which isn't video games, or any of that). Nah my friends don't have cars. I have my permit, i can get my liscens March but i won't bother. My parents won't get me a car, if i'm to get a car i'd have to pay for it myself, not that i can't get one just that its not something i'm willing to worry about if in 3 and a half months i'll be going into the navy where everything will be hectic for the first 2 years at least.
My parents are on the verge of getting divorced, they hate me and have kicked me out of the house more than a few times...(not exagerating on the fact that they hate me). I just need to have them sign the paper for me to enlist June 14th when i turn 17 and then i can get the hell out of their way for good...

Your life is indeed hard, but not that hard nor is it uncommon. Thousands of other teenagers out there have gone through worse than you. In your situation, I'd say save for a good bike, which is around $300~$400. You don't need a $1000 track/road bike or anything, just something to get you to point A to point B, right?
And get your license regardless of whether you're getting a car. It's a form of identification and will make your life and all your paperwork such as Selective Service, college apps, voter registration, military enlistment papers, et all) much easier. You don't want to carry your passport and your birth certificate around everywhere.
To me, it really sounds like you're just using the military to get away from your problems, which isn't "bad," but you need to ask yourself if that motivation alone is going to get you through BUD/s because nobody knows until you're actually in BUD/s. If you don't have the motivation to somehow figure out a way to travel 24 miles round trip on a regular basis, well then what?

heres a good swim workout.
ok first off do like a 250m freestyle warm up
then do a 500m combat sidestroke
after that i suggest you learn the breast stroke as it will help you tremendously on your combat sidestroke.
then do another 250m freestyle
next work on kicks and pulls so grap a floatie kick board and work on your pulls first with the kick board between your legs and just pull for about 250m
then do your kicks. this works on your strength which is important for times.
then after that for combat sidestroke work on speed intervals. just after each 50m sprint try to get a lower time. do about ten of them.
trust me it helps my swim for my first PST was 8:23 because my dad was a national swimmer and had me in the pool working my *** off from november till now.

Frankthetank19, you really seem to know what you're talking about and have good experiance in swimming. I have a few questions in the swimming area myself. Could I ask those questions over e-mail and maybe get some help from you? I hardly ever have time for a normal computer, I use my phone for web access and for some reason this site doesn't work well, takes a while to load. If its ok with you can you leave your e-mail address so i can contact you?

Thread Hijack
Samanoi, I just wanted to let you know that your parents don't hate you. It sounds like you have alot going on in your household, and one of the easiest things that we do as humans is lash out at the people we love the most. We are parents and far from perfect, we make mistakes on a daily basis. I am not excusing your parents for making you feel as though you are unloved that is unacceptable. I am the mom of 3 young children and I regularly ask myself if I'm being to hard on them, if I'm to easy and not making them work for it, or if I yell will I be sending them to therapy. If you talk to any adult they are carrying something from their childhood that has left some form of a scar on them. The thing that you need to remember is that you are almost an adult, you have the ability to communicate with your parents and try and firgure out a way to have a loving and nuturing relationship with them. There are always 3 sides to every story yours, theirs, and the truth. Sit down try and get them to see your side and try to see theirs some where in the middle you should both see the truth.

i'm gonna bump this and hijack a little, only because the thread title is the most applicable and my post is pretty similar to frank's.
i just want to share the swim workout i do weekly with you guys, because my PST time dropped dramatically (down 1:14!) after doing this for a few weeks. i swim 5-6 days a week, with every workout being less than an hour. every swim i start with 100m warmup, just to loosen up. i find that for me, that's the perfect number. after that i stretch out my legs and arms, then get started. STRETCH. it helps. so for each day of the week, start with that, then follow what's listed below.
m- 1000m CSS (regular, not sprint)- that's 20 laps. shoot for perfect form. focus on your technique, and try to go the length of the pool in 5 strokes. when you concentrate on technique and gliding, you'll find you go farther.
t- 1000m again, but this time, swim freestyle up, and use CSS back. i.e., half a lap free, half a lap CSS. think of them as mini sprints, or interval training. this is similar to hypoxic training, though less strenuous i think, but i like it because you're constantly moving. no breaks in between laps like with hypoxic pyramids.
w- 500m freestyle, then 500m CSS.
th- 1000m CSS. again, concentrate on technique. this should be an easier swim, let your muscles recoup after the previous two days of higher intensity.
f- 500m CSS sprint. balls to the wall, make each lap count; try to beat your best time here.
sat- 1500m CSS with fins. then 5 minutes treading water with fins. your legs should hate you by the end.
sun- off. relax. watch tv. eat a donut.
i hope someone gets something out of this. i don't claim to be a swim expert, but like i said, this really worked for me and i want someone else to benefit from it too. obviously everyone needs to tweak workouts for their own body/ability, but it's nice to see what other guys are doing and get an idea for working out.

i am going into class two seven four i DOR ed from class two five nine as far as making it through you just have to make up your mind about making it and you will there is no amount of preparation thats going to make you or break you at BUD/s you cant prepare for a kick in the balls and thats what BUD/s is your either willing to suck up the pain or your not
