About a week ago, I started coughing up blood in our morning conditioning runs with my college football team. I usually fit in a swim and crossfit style workout around noon everyday, we lift lift as a team at 3 pm. I went to the Dr. to see what the problem was, and I was told I have pneumonia. I have spent most of this week resting, however I still tried to do some of our workouts, but my energy is drained.

The antibiotics are working, I don't really seem to have any more "cold" symptoms, but my body is drained. My mind also feels drained, I can't seem to get motivated and my energy is gone. Is this normal for pneumonia? Is it unwise for me to be trying to get back into training? I put this in this forum because I understand at BUD/S some students catch pneumonia, and I was hoping someone would have some insight for me.

Thanks for any help

DD will most certainly have better, and more professional, advice to give. But, I've had pneumonia twice in my life. Both times, it was completely debilitating. Even after 2 weeks of anti-biotic treatment it was still 4 more weeks to get my lung capacity and energy back. The best bet it to talk to your doctor and let him know what you'd like to do. He'll let you know when you can get back to the grind.

I've also had pneumonia and yeah, it seemed like it took forever to recover. I remember just walking to the car and back felt like I'd ran 5 miles!

You've got to listen to your body. It needs the rest to recover, it can take a month or two to fully recover. Also, have you been doing deep breathing exercises? Due to the illness you now have reduced aerobic capacity. You could possibly even have a little bit of inflammation left in the lungs too, often that is the cause of lingering symptoms.

Divedoc....you going to bring in your expertise, or do you need to be convinced with a little sweet talkin???? :)

Newton,

i will answer this as best i can tonight or tomorrow. I need a few details from you. If you are not comfortable with posting them here you can PM me.

Did the doctor examine you? What made him think it was pneumonia? Have you coughed up blood before? Did you cough up more than once? Has it happened since? Was it bright red or more of a coffee ground colour? Have you had any blood in your stool or from your back passage?

How are you feeling now? Have the symptoms resolved and is it just feeling tired and drained?

First up until we have a better idea, you need to stop training, take a couple of days off and sleep and hydrate yourself as much as possible. No arguments here, your body has taken quite a hit and it will only prolong recovery if you dont let it heal. I suggest trying to get 12 hours sleep in the next couple of nights if you can.

Hope you are feeling a little better.

Doc:

Thanks for your response, I don't mind answering here. Yes, the doctor did examine me, but he was very brief. He said he thought I had it because of "weezing" in my breathing. I have never coughed up blood before, and it persisted for one day and stoped after the first treatment of azithromycin. The blood was a coffee ground type color, but has not happened since I started the antibiotics. I have had no blood in my stool or urine either.

Today I feel much better, most of the symptoms are gone now. Yesterday I felt very drained, and our head coach told me to take today and the weekend off. I still feel drained, but much better from yesterday after some sleep last night. But it definitely messed with my head feeling so unmotivated the past week, I felt like a *****!

Anyways, thanks again for your time and advice everyone, hope this next bit of information can help out some more.
