Hey guys,
first off i just want to say this forum is awesome. ive been on here for the past week just taking in all this great info and it has deffinetly solidified my decision to try for the SWCC! But i do need some guidance. I just dep'd in 3 weeks ago, since i aced the asvab my recuiter talked me into the NUKEs (the money is what got me). But my desire for joining the Navy from day one has been the spec. ops. Ive been a competitive, hard-nosed kid all my life, i was an all-state athlete in high school and i love challenges and i preform the best when i am pushed to my limits. Where should i go from here since i have heard that you cant get a SWCC contract being a NUKE? I acctually started training a month ago using the warning order but i was already in good shape so im at the end of phase 1 of it. Oh and my ship date for basic is sept 3. ANY help or guidance is welcomed and greatly appreciated!!! thanks

tell your recruiter that you want SWCC. If he says no, tell him you're not going to boot until you get SWCC (have to pass the PST of course).

my recruiter was the same way. he said something like "you'd really be doing me a favor if you chose nuke." and I was like dude, I'll chose the job i want, not the job you want me to have. i chose aircrew. now i've got a SEAL contract. so just don't stop until you get what you want.

best of luck bro.

I was a Nuke before I got my SWCC contract...so don't worry about that. What you're thinking of is once you go to boot camp...where they ask people if they want to volunteer...Nuke is the only one there they won't let switch over. Even at that, from my understanding a Nuke is still allowed to under the rules, but that just won't put it through for you. Just pass the test before you leave and you're golden. After all, you're not legally bound to the Navy until you take the oath again before you leave for boot camp.

Dont do it man. Nuke I mean. All I wanted to do is be a SEAL but I had to choose another job just in case I failed. I chose machinist mate on subs and I wasn't allowed to switch in boot camp. This job sucks by the way and I hear nuke is much worse. Get your stuff lined up for special ops, believe me thats the only way to go in the navy, if your like me and love spec ops then nothing else compares. Good Luck.

I was pondering the same situation as you...I scored a 92 on ASVAB and they pushed me hard into Nuke. Money was/will never be a priority in my life so i ruled out the money id make and looked at it as an extreme educational challenge (nuke) vs. a combined educational/ physical challenge (SWCC). I cant sit around forever in school or at a desk job or i will strangle myself....so it was an easy choice for me. I love school (college) now but id rather "accelerate my life." I will still finish my masters ASA i can but through SWCC i will achieve my overall goal. Plus you sound like a well educated and physically capable guy. So believe me when i say they need guys like us. Just go to MEPS and you will fell 100 times better about your decision, no offense to anyone. Ive researched and thought endlessly for the past 6 months about this decision and im finally signing into SWCC this week. Be 110% committed heart, mind, and soul to whatever you choose. Im not even thinking about another job because i will not lose...i will find a way to become a SWCC. Quitting is not an option...Choose wisely.

thanks for the advice guys. im goin to my recruiter next week and telling him straight up i want that SB contract. but i do have one more question. My eyesight isnt up to par so if i pass the pst and everything else to be a SWCC can i still get a contract and get the PRK surgery before i head to training?

How do you know Nukes on subs is worse? I have served in the submarine force for 3 1/2 years. I assume you are in Groton going through school. I will post later and let you all know a little more on this subject to help clarify.
