I am almost threw getting certified at the YMCA and would like suggestions on a gear set. I currently own nothing. Are the packages the way to go or should i peice it together.
Most importantly anybody with a bad review of a product would be nice.

Check out this website. They have a ton of gear and ratings. You may also want to check out your local dive shop. See what they can service and if they have any good prices. Always do you homework before hand though.

Good gear is not cheap gear. Whatever you get make sure you everything about it and how to use it in any situation. Could save your life down the road. Stay with the big name manufactuers as well. Aqualung, Scubapro, Dacor. These can be serviced quite easily and parts are not hard to come by. Good luck.

Rodales Scuba Diver Magazine does reviews on gear and they are non-biased so it is pretty accurate. I belive they are online as well.
I bought my gear back in the 90's but went with:
Scubapro Regulators, mask, snorkel, drysuit
IDI Nekton 2000 BC
Genisis computer
Apollo BioFins
Bare Wetsuit
Try to stay away from the off-brand regulators, bc's and computers. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Since youre just now getting certified..dont buy tanks..a bc...or even a weight belt..just rent those things when you go to dive..
all I would buy since youre just starting out would be a mask..and invest in a good one..take care of it..and DONT LOSE IT!
Fins..I think aqualung makes the best..thats what I use
Snorkle..just because I enjoy snorkleing while Im doning my time outta the water during a boat dive...
I do own a BC and couple of 3 and 5 mil wet suits..but thats just cause Ive been diving A LOT in the past 3 or so years..
If you want..spend the money on a good regulator...sometimes you run into a dive shop that will rent you a really crappy reg once..I ran into a dive shop in Hawaii..wont name any names..but my Octopus went down on me while I was at around 90 ft...I only knew this because a guys reg just flat lost pressure and we had to make a buddy breathing ascent...needless to say I went out and got a good regulator that I could take care of! havent had a problem since

Other dive magazines...biased opinions since their reviews are mostly paid advertisements from the magazine's sponsers...I'm jus' sayin'....

Agreed. In fact there isn't a dive mag out there that I would even read anymore. The Navy's Faceplate mag is my only source.

Unbiased opinions are the best one's out there. Good suggestion on the magazine.
