View Full Version : MUSIC Thread!!!

In honor of those who'd mentioned a favorite Music thread- I decided to jump in anyway and help get it rolling [earlier posts not withstanding!].

Having been in radio [family done incidentally] since 1966, there's very little between the 60s era and the 90 Pop era I don't have a "smattering of ignorance" in- we can discuss tunes, pass lirical trivia or most what-not right in this thread... In order to keep things relatively congenial I ask only 3 things:

Ground Rules:

1- No "slamming" musical tastes.

Note the period at the end of that sentence.

If we want a good laugh at some truly dreadful numbers that's one thing; note it in your opening post sentence [such as Freebird or Piano Man being requested at every piano bar in America or You Light Up My Life, the most recognized and NOT requested song of all time] - but if somebody mentions a Barry Manilow song because they had a deceased relative that enjoyed it- let's be considerate, fair enough?

2- Music is music-

It doesn't have to be Pop specific nor related to only radio hits- if you have musicals, soundtracks or comedy albums [or, I suppose it's CDs these days... Showin' some age here...] offer them up, but be gracious if people haven't heard of it and consider that perhaps you can now offer up a 'net' spot, a single or classic archive somewhere where everyone can get a listen- you may open a new door to expanding an audience!

3- If in doubt, see rule #1- this isn't The Jungle, [unless it concerns a certain Axel Rose hit and "no" I'm not related to him (another story for another threaad)]we're here to bare witness to some really stange tastes that people may not have expected from our on-line personas!

That's it- simple, concise and hopefully vague enough we can really have some fun with this!

The starter to this thread concerned "Favorite Billy Joel tunes"...

Me personally- that's a tough one- I got a soft spot for The Piano Man [Joel as well as the song] I loved We Didn't Start The Fire and Captain Jack.

Truth be told, I've got two of his greatest hits collections and I have no problem enjoying every last single on either of them.

"You may be right... I may be crazy- Oh! But I may just be the lunatic you're looking for!"

And of course there's...

"It's just a fantasy [oh, oh, oooh] It's not the real thing!"

Bring me your tired, your huddled collection of oldies-but-goodies!

I'm sure we can all relate!

Simple, everybody list their favorite songs .......... and from a purely selfish standpoint {helping me reload my MP3 player}.

I am too dumb to remember titles but I like Foo Fighters, Shins, Wilco, Queens of Stonage, stuff like that and classics like G&R Sweet Child of Mine, U2 Vertigo

On behalf of me ....... thanks and looking forward to some great suggestion

I'll start with some Jefferson Airplane:

Or is that too old... ?

I doubt there's more than a "six fingered hand full" that can come up with songs that get any kind of ligitimate play that I've not heard...

I'm all over J' 'Plane!

"Don't you want somebody to love you...!"

How about Hendrix- All Along The Watchtower..?

Yeah, it's been in every post-Vietnam flick since the 1980s, but the guitar during the seventies [much like JA] was pure and innocent- even at it's most raucus!

Don't forget Are You Experienced- mmm, yeah!

As to U2- Vertigo! don't forget to dip into such off-beat tangents as a live performance of Goin Home performed during the All-Star benefit for victims of 9/11...

I'm digging through my PSP 4 gig card right now seeing "what's got the most dust on it" in terms of age...

Holy crap... Looks like it might be Andy Kim's Rock Me Gently [gotta love that Jeep commercial!]

Ah, a Grace Slick fan I see...

Well, she didn't look too bad in the Ed Sullivan video... amazing what a couple years of acid and H will do to a soul

FXGuy
01-30-2008, 10:16 AM
How about this..?

As Courtney pointed out, it may be a bit "nothing" if all we're doing is naming off song faves- so by all means toss in lyrics and see if anyone "gets" them...

Case in point- here's an easy one for you:

Bah, bah, bah, bay-bee

Yyyy- you ain't seh, seh, seen

Nuthin' Yet [uber guitar riff to back it up!]

Would that be a little Bachman-Turner Overdrive??

FXGuy

May all your parcels be delivered by burly and curvacious UPS men in tight brown shorts [well it's that or Drew Carey...]

Kal has it- BTO- Baby You Aint Seen Nuthin' Yet!

The caveate to these kinds of threads, of course is that trivia is easily enough sought using yahoo or google- not that this is an instance- it was way too easy...

Now-
Just to continue with easy a little longer- let's go "RetroContemporary Pop"...

We are, we are, we are
we're just children
Finding our way around in-decision.
We are, we are, we are
all but helpless
Take this forever,

Fill in the title lyric and the group... ;)

Been going crazy for the last little bit singing that song, I think it has whisper or dream in the title not sure of the band either maybe I'm just trying to block out the 80's. :) Help a women out a give already!

daaang I feel really, well, young. I do homework to stuff like Metallica, Fall Out Boy, Britney Spears (when I need a reminder that education is important), Good Charlotte ... um a little Ozzy, some Linkin Park and ... some 80's. The oldest song I have is ... maybe kung fu fighting or ... charlie pride.

No one's even mentioned the best guitar riff/solo ever, which is of course
Van Halen- Eruption http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feZnnhoFg_Y

Any challenges to this claim?

Rush, Zeppelin, SABBATH(of course), Ozzman, Black Label Society, OLD Metallica, Slayer, ZZTop, SRV, Boston, Kansas, CCR, sheesh---I have a huge list.

Stevie Ray...absolutely! Cold Shot...
Gary Moore....Still Got The Blues
Santana....

My problem is I like everything. I'm a huge fan of blues - especially Southern Rock Blues like Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. But also love traditional blues like Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, the smooth trumpet of Miles Davis...etc. Also a huge fan of Latin Jazz, everything from Gato Barbieri, and his screaming sax, to Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stan Getz, Hank Crawford....the list is too long.

I'm a music whore. You name it, I probably know it.

Every last single one of Pammy's top 10 "Classics"...

Aye yi, yi- the 80s have become classics at last...

What the hell ever happened to 'parachute pants' and 'Members Only' jackets- I'm still seeing gak from the 'Retro-Seventies'...?!

Otherwise, quite a few of Pammy's selections mirror some of my own... Where you have an 'appendage' my dear- mine's wired in like The Terminator- all hard socket and gleaming "Unobtanium" metal... [LOL]

In answer to the trivia question- the song was "Whisper to a Scream" by Icle Works, an English band from teh 80s "British Invasion" which was a much capitalized resurgence of the 1960s original "invasion" of pop culture/music heralded by The Beatles...

McBonas- exceptional point concerning guitar riff- Van Halen surely is the pre-eminant of the scene, but one has to temper such claims against such 'old school' classics that inspire "today's yesterday masters" with the likes of such artists as"

Jimi Hendrix "Are You Experienced"-
Esteban's classical interpretations [though relatively 'new' on the recording scene- he was around in the late 70s and early 80s]
BB King and his 'singing' guitar Lucille,
Some would say that Slash [Guns-n-Roses] had a deferential 'magic touch' with November Rain as well as other riffs/solos in GnR's play list;
David Gilmore- Pink Floyd- try out "Comfortably Numb"- though one may not contend that his "riff" is as 'rad' [boy- just dated myself there] as EVH- he is none-the-less exceptionally comperable with creativity.
Glenn Tipton- Judas Priest- made playing the fret board an art all his own. Most assuredly all of them different styles and different genres of music but one can not contend a "supreme" excellency when there are so many shining examples of the human condition in music!

Next 'trivial pursuit' meets out with another one of my all time favorites- incidentally, Prince [yes, his royal 'Purpleness'] provided the synthesiser back-up for this!

No one knows how I feel
What I say unless you read between my lines
One man walked away from me
First he took my hand...take me home

Any takers?

BD, U2 rocks!!!

I was going to post my favs, but got lazy . . .lol. . . waaay too long a list! I have a very quirky taste and I'm just all over the map! I have to say I'm one of those who associate events of my life with a song!

And Bree-Bree brings up an excellent point- "Songs that remind me of..."

I'd have to break this down carefully so as not to hurt feelings or completely misjudge someone based on their forum personna- understanding also that our lyrical tastes presume our vantage points as well...

Perhaps starting with Bree, I'd go with ...

Feminine Whiles= Money Can't Buy It- Annie Lennix
Cancer Survivor= The Touch- Stan Bush [hey, I said it'd be my interprretation]
Love of Family= We Have All the Time In the World- Louis Armstrong
Love of Forum= Walkin' On Sunshine- The Pretenders
Love of The Good Times= We Are Family- Sister Sledge
Stoicism for The Bad Times= You Are Loved- Josh GrobanAll of 'em are favorites of mine- much like the many spledored people of this forum.

Opeth,

Got to youtube and type in "300 Opeth", tell me that isn't one of the most awesome things ever.

Black Rose Immortal
Ghost of Perdition
The Funeral Portrait

All Opeth, the songs are long, 10-20mins but the cover a lot of terrain so to speak. The solos are amazing. These are just a few off the top of my head, might be a little to hardcore for some, but the "music" as in guitar work is beautiful.
