Are BUD/S courses held year round or are the held for colder months. I have been in the pacific in the summer and it was colder than hell then.

BUD/S is held year around, its just luck of the draw whether you get a summer or winter class. Winter classes are notorious for having the highest washout rates due to the cold. The winter classes usually have water temperatures somewhere in the mid 50's where as summer classes can sneak up close to 70 sometimes. Either way BUD/S sucks, the water temp is just another speed bump along the way. All SEALs are bad *** and tough as nails, but I gotta hand it to the guys who made it through the winter hell week :D

As I understand it, the NSWC in Coronado is running 6 BUD/S classes a year. This changed a couple years ago when the new manning requirements and the addition of a lot a NSW billets were approved. I'm not 100% on this, but, the BTDTs can correct me if I'm wrong.

BUD/S is not just about the cold it's also about the heat to. If you have a winter class surf tortue will be wrost but only because you'll do it more in Hell week. But the ommurtion time will be shorte. In 6O dergees C they'll put in for 3 15 minutes ommurtion. If the water is colder then 54 dergees you can only be in for 5 minutes tops before every body starts getting Hippotermie. they can't have hip out becuase that would get in the way of all the fun evalotion like log and land bortage. The heat give you the other tip of Hippothermie the kinded that cooks your brain. the runs won't be shorter or slower. somtimes without bants if they felling genoras but all way in boot.
If you get heat exsation one time your done and your never coming back.
that makes guy think if i don't Quit because I'm dehidataed I'am done so I better Quiet. this is form A guy how's got frist hand exsperants. winter summer class throw defint there tit for tat

Not that I have a choice but supposing I did I might choose the winter then.

I dont like the cold but there is no avoiding it. I played football for a few years and the two a days in the heat were always alot worse than training in the cold for me personally.

The big variable there is I am in NC with the 100% humidity.

Also on or off of this website are there any present or pretty recent SEAL Corpsman anyone knows of that could help advise me on that career path. I am currently a civilian medic and have a huge toss up between SEALs and PJs as a possible future career

I posted a thread a few weeks ago asking about "Hot or Cold" It seemed that many of the guys on here would rather be cold. No matter what I am sure it sucks after reading some of the post from the team guys. Hot, cold, mild, summer, or fall "Instructor Ocean is one bad dude".

Look at the bright side the cold water is ice therapy for all swollen joints. I rather freeze than be hot.

Well let me just say they both suck, but sometimes you get the best of both worlds. Our Hell Week was warm and sunny during the day, but the water was still only in the upper 40s and lower 50s. So at night it sucked. Jackhammering beyond all belief. Drinking 14-15 cups of water at chow just so I knew I would continually be able to pee myself sucked. I have seen the hot hell weeks and the cold hell weeks. I think if you experienced anything close to the level of cold we are talking about you would be singing a different tune on being in a winter class. For those of you that have never been to San Diego, even in the middle of the summer the nights are chilly. It's an aquired thing, when I first got here I couldn't believe how cold it was at night in the middle of the summer. Now make that cold during the day and colder at night during the winter. It is one of the reasons that 269 is only going to come out of hell week with about 31 guys as it is looking right now.

San Diego is pretty far south, so the outside temp doesn't change a WHOLE lot. However, neither does the ocean water. The water will always be around 55 to 65 degrees down there. Its not too bad.

I have been at both ends of the spectrum -40 to 132 and to me it's not even close, I will take the heat over the cold all the time. You can acclimatize to heat but I have never been able to acclimatize to the cold, no matter how often I am in it, it's still freakin mind numbling freezing.

I really cannot imagine anyone who has actual experience in both conditions opting for the cold over the heat

Yep, I'm gonna have to go with the heat too. I've been in the Pacific at night many times in the winter, and HOLY **** it sucks. The summer is a little better, as the water temp is sometimes higher than the air temp, which doesn't make it "feel" all that bad. I go night bodysurfing all the time in the summer with just trunks, and can last a good hour before I really start to shiver.

I got to tuesday afternoon of a winter hellweek and about an hour before i got rolled it started raining...for 4 more days it stopped about 10 in the morning on friday. It was the most miserable experiance i have ever seen. I only got to tuesday my first time but there is nothing worse than a winter hellweek when you have hypothermia and chaffing on your nut sack. Winter hellweeks are terrrable...bottom line.

I swear the center has a contract with Mother Nature. The instructor staff always jokes about how no matter what time of year it is, Hell Week weather sucks, and as soon as it is secured it seems to get better. God is a frogman.

Lol i know exactlly what you mean. My Hellweek was suposed to be beautiful weather the whole week. Sunday morning we were watching the weather channel and the news guy was like "if i could paint a picture of this coming week i would need lots of Arctic Blue".......it rained Tuesday morning till Friday Morning, about secure time.

Warm Class has to be better.

Super cold water/weather just sucks

Being from Texas I guess I am just used to a warmer climate, but to me 50 degree water sucks so much more than 60 degrees...that 10 degrees makes such a difference

I personally would take the heat over the cold. At least if you're hot, surf torture will actually be a relief, not a punishment. There are ways to cool down if you're too hot, but its pretty much impossible to warm up if you are soaked to the bone and freezing.

If you wonder where you should go(PJs or SEAL teams), my opinion would be to go to the Corpsman side. I am a Corpsman at 29 Palms Marine Corp base. so I have had a chance to see them first hand. My training so far has been great. Better then that of the Air force from what I hear from their own mouths. So....if you, by whatever chance get dropped (Dor or Med), you can get rolled back into the Corpsman rate. And deploy with the Devil Dogs till you try again. But.......It depends on what you want. Seals are more combat oriented where the PJs are more find and retrieve from what I have read.

I believe you are right. The drop rate on winter hellweek is much higher than that of summer hellweek. So much so, that on the winter hellweek shirts they designate that it was a "winter" hellweek....sort of a badge of honor. So all you guys who are saying poo-poo to the cold and that you can handle it better than the heat, the stats say otherwise.
