IMO, you want to be completely comfortable in the water. If you have a problem area and it's a stroke then you will likely have problems in other areas. You don't need to be proficent in it, but you shouldn't be uncomfortable if during a PT session you are asked to swim 500-1000m crawlstroke (as far as the Marines, it's not called freestyle, I'm betting it's the same on the blue side).

Don't forget you have evolutions such as the bee hive, 50m underwater, 5min tread water with drive gear no hands. Bee hive is a one shot deal. That's being comfortable treading water with your class with you mask full of water.

Crawlstroke can be a great workout too for sprints and hypoxic swims.

Cantley - stop practicing the 50 meter underwater swim and any other breath holding **** you do underwater. A 17 year old died the other day because he held his breath too long.

Because of this, my SEAL motivator announced to me and the other guys in DEP that there will no longer be any breath-holding or underwater swims done during the mentoring sessions and if he hears about us doing it on our own then we will lose our contract. So don't do it.

BenefitMC - the beehive has been explained on other threads. do a search for it.
