hello
Ive been wanting to join the navy since I was 15, My uncle is a e-6 et2 aboard the uss cole, I look up to him, his strength, and his courage very much. I want to become apart of the navy and join swcc to gain those values. only I have one small problem I have a G.E.D. Im wondering if you can join the navy and swcc? Ive heard both yes and no and I want to get it straight. I took the practice asvab about 1 year ago and scored an 80, is that good enough? Ive also Used drugs and acohol in the past but it was a while ago so I hope it wont penalize me.
thanks for replies

I have always been under the impretion that you could join the navy with a G.E.D. but i am not positive. You probably just need a waiver... any one have a better answer?
Have you talked to a recruiter?
just cause i know some one will say something or some DEPer is going to get confused... he is an ET1 if he is E-6... or if he is an ET2 he is E-5

Conroy,
You can join the Navy with your G.E.D. The fact that you have done drugs may be a problem though. Have you talked to a recruiter? If you have I am sure he asked you if you had used drugs in the past. Now the reason I say this is because this can and will effect how high of a security clearance you can get. SWCC is required to have a MINIMUM of Secret I believe and I am sure that you will have to get higher than that after becoming an Boat Operator. I am not saying you cannot get a Secret Clearance if you smoked pot "experiementally" two times. If you were a hard user of different drugs for a while, that is where it could get bad. There are many other jobs in the Navy that DO NOT require clearances.
Now there will be a time in your life when you have to look at people that have been defending your country for years, some longer than you have been alive, and tell them a honest answer about what you told your recruiter. It's called the "Moment of Truth". I don't know how much of a user you were in the past but if it was a lot then you may have to re-consider your options. If you are confident with lying to your recruiter and lying at bootcamp then that is on you. I know GREAT Sailors who used every drug you could imagine before they joined the Navy and took that path. If you think you can serve your country and never do it again then I am all for it. On the other hand, if you think you may in the future then I don't want you in my Navy.
The biggest thing is talk to a recruiter and he can give you the best answers. Don't be afraid to ask us in here though. I am a wanna-be just trying to help out.

Oh dont get me me wrong im not shooting heroine or anything, like you said Ive done pot maybe 3 times and it was months ago...and I drink maybe once a month, so like I said I dobt it would do anything against me, Im glad I can join with a G.E.D ive been told by countless people that "no they wont let you in" or "better hurry up..they only allow like 2% of the people who apply with a G.E.D in", Now just to work on my fitness as of right now Im 6'0 and 180, Id like to stay at this wieght but lose some fat and gain some muscle. Right now I can do the required push ups and sit ups, pull ups I can do 4 but I have a question..I know you must start with your arms completely extened, must you go back to that postion after every pull up or can I just "normally" do pull ups. I havnt had a chance to swim yet but im running every day so ill keep you guys updated im gunna go see a recruiter with in the next 2 days.

You have to pull the bar to your adam's apple and then go back down until your arms are straight and locked and repeat. Actually, my motivator made me do the first six on his count and then I was on my own after the first 6...basically, on his count 'up, down, up, down' ..that's how I was made to do it.

alright some new questions, how long are swcc deployed for? I heard a guy say they were gone then most other spec ops almost all the time? is this true? also how does becoming a swcc happen? do I get swcc in my contract, or do I go in as another rating say...MA and then do they ask you if you want to do swcc in basic? also I know this may be off topic,forum...but does anyone know what master at arms do? are they being used as anti terrorism as well?

SWCC will deploy on 6-month deployments aboard an amphib ship---prolly either an LPD or an LSD. Depending on which coast you end up with you will either see the Med or Westpac.
Master at arms is like the police.

You can do that.. go MA then in bootcamp volunteer for SWCC, but there will be no guarantee that you will go to SWCC school because its not on your contract.
Im an active MA3 and the MA rate is now a anti-terrorism/physical security job, the base police billets are rare, so dont expect to be writing speeding tickets. Expect to stand post with gear/kevlar on, which can be quite boring.

Except, of course, SBT-22. They do not do their deployments onboard any ships. They are flown to and from their locale.

Most Dets do not deploy via Gator anymore. They are either deployed for purpose or FOBed at an NSWU. It's been like this for years at least at 20.

Conroy, you probably already know this, but unless you have already, dont mention the use of drugs with the recruiter you sign in with, it will hurt your rating availability. Unless you have drug violations on your record or more than 6 or so traffic violations, your good to go. That is unless youve smoked yourself retarted and they can tell that you are somewhat "dull." I have a friend who like i, tried pot once in HS and hated it but he mentioned he tried and lost serveral available ratings. So he mentioned it to me and i kept it on the DL. I think they assume with drugs people who done it once done it twice. Cant blame em.

Don't enter the Navy on lies, they will come back to haunt you. Realize that you have to apply for a clearance to get in SWCC. They will go and talk to your friends and your family about what you used to do, and if you have them lie for you as well, they can be charged with perjury... you are under oath when you do it.
What your recruiter is looking for is disclosure. They want to be comfortable that your "experimental" phase is over and you are ready to go and make something of yourself, DRUG-FREE. Demonstrate that to your recruiter and the waivers will start to come out.
Be honest guys, don't listen to anyone who tells you to lie to get in the military.
Honor, Courage, Committment is right. Live by it.
