get really comfortable underwater. push yourself underwater, just get really used to it...me and a buddy of mine try to make each other pass out by wrestling in water we can't touch bottom. sounds retarded but it works pretty good.

You're right... it does sound retarded.

I wouldn't reccomend trying to make your friend pass-out while in water deep enough to drown in. But he's right about you getting comfortable under water. Need to be able to tread water for hours and hours, hold your breath for a good 2 minutes, and swim very well. It's not hard. Just go to the pool a few times a week and practice.

Didley,

you dont train for drown-proofing per se. At least not the way it will be done in BUD/S as it is classed as an extremely high risk activity and is fully supported and medically staffed at BUD/S. Do not attempt it by yourself.

The following pic should give you a visual idea of what it looks like:

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/navy-seal-11.jpg

It involves having your hands and feet bound, and bobbing from the surface to the bottom of the pool and back up again using your lungs as buoyancy by expelling air for 30 mins or greater.

Before you attempt anything like it you must be a very competent swimmer, very comfortable in and under the water and capable of treading water very comfortably, as has been mentioned above, for a long period of time. That would be classed as a good start!! However, only a start!!! :D

Anybody else notice the one guy not bobbing up/down just sort of kicking back laying on bottom of pool?

Actually, you know what, it looks like hes trying to pick up his mask with his teeth! What do you think?

yeah probably trying to get his mask or maybe hiding? What I do to prepare for drown proofing is I swim 100m as if my hands and legs were tied I force my feet together and clasp my hands together behind my back and it is kinda a pain I do this mind you in a 4 foot deep pool and there are NO physical things binding my hands or feet so its safe-ish.but only way to get more comfortable in the water is to swim more. This is just something I do right after my 500m for time challenging cool down that may help in the future

Thatguy,

i hear ya, its not much fun swimming like that and it really does exert you. Ive found that once you can master your breathing while flapping up and down the pool like that, you just take your time and travel as smoothly as possible. The faster you try to go while being "bound" the less distance you travel, and you are dead right, in the shallower end of the pool is certainly the most appropriate for this exercise.

LMAO that is a good way to lose your friend's life or yours. Its one thing to be comfortable and push yourself underwater, its another thing to be irresponsible and dangerous.

Holy crap. This type of ignorance is going to seriously injure, or worse off, kill someone someday.

Drown proofing is something that no one should practice before they get to the center. It's not smart at all to do this, especially when you're completely ignorant as to what it involved.

The drown proofing test consists of bobbing, floating, travelling, bobbing, flipping, retrieving mask from bottom of pool, and then some more bobbing. All while have hands and feet bound. It's not a hard test, it's not soemthing that anyone should practice before going to BUD/S. The program is set up to give you enough practice to pass with flying colors.

The drown proofing involves nothing to do with treading water, though I would recommend treading water as a workout additive.

Yup, you are absolutely correct, he is trying to pick up mask with teeth, funny picture. You could almost sell it as drown-proofing gone very, very bad .....

100% agree! I never even heard of drown proofing until I checked into BUD/S and had zero problem with it! Don't get me wrong it sucks but you are more than prepared for every evolution at BUD/S...it comes down to staying cool under pressure and simply being stud!! If you show up in GREAT shape....and compete....all else takes care of its self!! Do the warning order...and the workouts outlined on this site....Remember back in my day there was ZERO info on BUD/S....all just rumours...no internet....nothing....you showed up in great shape....and competed....this holds true today!!

I sometimes get caught up in worrying about all the evolutions in BUD/s and wondering if im training for the rights things and what not, but like BUD/s 184 said, just show up prepared and be ready to work your *** off and everything else just falls into place.

Ok for what this is worth....I taught swimming and was a lifeguard for a good many of years. Many have said the same advice over again in this thread. Finding the comfort level in the water... somebody could bind my feet and hands together and throw me into any pool and i wouldnt panic- this is b/c Im very comfortable. Bobbing up and down for breath will not excert any energry as long as you are calm. As BUD/s 184 and Sucks and a few others have said....this is something that cant be practiced prior....its too dangerous to do without professionals around in case of an emergency.

Drownproofing is a great evolution where you get to see your class LPO DOR in the shallow section of the pool!!!

Your instructors will teach you everything you need to know...just practice and don't cheat while you practice.

This reminds me, some kids were talking about SEAL training in one of my classes and about the class 234 series. One of them was like yeah my dad went where they trained he said they were bobbing up and down. Then he says , yeah I heard they make you do that for like 24 hours in case you fall off the ship and I heard they make you stay still for 2 days.

lol...

"...yeah I heard they make you do that for like 24 hours in case you fall off the ship and I heard they make you stay still for 2 days" oh yeah that's true...and then immediately they get in the Pacific and swim up to San Francisco...haha where do people get this stuff from.

I notice some masks lying on the bottom of the pool plus a couple of guys swimming not bound, instructors perhaps, ripping off masks? SURPRISE SURPRISE!!
