View Full Version : Scissor kick with Rocket Fins

I've been swimming the side stroke for a long time, then I went to some fins...now I have Rocket Fins. I do something, I guess is, unusual. Instead of flutter kicking, I use a regular scissor kick like during a normal side stroke. Nice and smooth through the water, doesn't bother my legs/ankles at all. I can see a slight difference in speed --> the flutters are a lil faster but only because I don't slow down during the widening of the legs like on the scissor.
Just curious to see if anyone else uses a scissor kick with any type of fins, particularly the Rockets. :)

I was going to ask the same thing... Does anyone know what they teach at BUD/S as far as which kick to use with fins? In Stew Smiths DVD it shows constant flutter kicks with the fins but Ive also seen doing the normal scissor kick. Any ideas?

Rockets are for underwater. Duckfeet are for surface swimming.

Both fins are used for surface and underwater, rescue swimmers use rocket fins. Scissor kicking is only used without fins. Flutter kicks for fins. I would recommend to get your legs used to flutter kicks and the motion try starting off with turtle backs, and lots of flutter kicks out of the water, make sure you flex your hip flexor very well. Just my opionion

I've been using the duckfeet for a couple of months and it seems that I get the best propulsion by using a slight variance of a flutter kick by using more of a modified bicycle kick. It seems that I only really get moving on the downward stroke of the fins, if this makes any since. Does anyone by chance do the same technique, by keeping the knees bent more than keeping them straight?

My advice and I say this is because when i was going through sar school we would get hammered if caught bicycle kicking with fins, its bad form and i believe you probably do it to get relief off the correct muscles from correctly flutter kicking. Bicycle kicking is wrong and my advice is quit now so you dont make it a bad habit.

Misson is way different. You guys use one because you need the power of the rocket for your job. Your not surface swimming for miles or doing 2500yard ship attacks with a rebreather. Different tools for different jobs.

Try NOT bicycle kick with a set of twins on your back. Serious. SAR much different than Navy diving.
