Okay so I think I'm gonna head to MEPS after they re-open from the holiday break here so I've got one major question for any of you guys who have gone recently (Maybe even the Syracuse, NY station which is where I'll be headed)... What is the damn eyetest like? Is it just a piece of paper on the wall you cover one eye at a time and read off the letters or is it something more advanced like a randomly generated set of letters like my optometrist has?

Reason I ask is that it's gonna be really borderline whether I pass the 20/200 or not and I have absolutely no problem memorizing the first line or two in order to get a waiver and get my *** out to Coronado. Anyone who has taken the test, let me know the set-up so I can finally get goin' here and don't have to worry about paying for the damn PRK on my own.

I went to MEPS 2 weeks ago in Milwaukee, WI. The best way to describe it is to say that I looked through something that would closely resemble a microscope. I'm sure there's a name for it I just don't know what it is. So you stick your head up to this "microscope" and look through it to see the sheet with all the letters on it. She tells you to read the 9th line or something. Flips a switch that will cover one eye, read the 9th line, flips the switch again to cover the other eye, read the 9th line. That's about it. It took less than 2 minutes. As far as memorizing the letter sequence, I have no idea if it stays the same or changes.

Ah, f*ckin' balls.

That's like the legit, full blown test she gave you then. It changes the lenses to select what the best refraction is to correct your vision. It's pretty simple but that would be hard as hell to cheat... Did the letter screen change at all? Like, was it a projected sequence of letters or just the standard piece of paper stuck on a wall? Obviously if its just paper I can memorize that but I'm a little rusty on my telepathy these days if it isn't...

Thanks for the heads-up in advance, King.

Just as a heads up, there's also a new machine that automatically determines your eyesight. It's setup like a microscope and and image is placed for you to view. The doc tells you to focus on the main object and the computer and laser tech in the machine does the rest. I came back 20/35 and 20/40.

Thanks man,

Think I got this covered actually. Went in to get a second opinion on my vision today and my left eye is actually 20/200 (which is jusst barelyyyy okay) and my right eye is 20/250 (obv. not waiverable). Sooo, what the doc tells me is that he can get me a prescription for contacts that actually help to temporarily reshape your eye for a few hours. I guess you wear them at night and the effect lasts most of the day....

That said, pop those bad boys in a few nights in a row before MEPS and I can beat the mark and get the Navy to pay for my PRK surgery. Solddddd.
