1941.
HooYah! A day of infamy and memorial for the brave Sailors, Marines, and soldiers who's lives were snuffed out by a cowardly attack upon beautiful Pearl Harbor.
A heartfelt prayer goes out to all of them and their families that they may have an outstanding Christmas.........wherever they may be..

Absolutely SeaSpectre! Thanks for the reminder with this post. Sometimes we get caught up in our own trials and tribulations and some of the more important things get put to the back burner.
Again Thanks for bringing this to the front burner for us!
'A Day That Will Live In Imfamy'. This day doesn't go unnoticed in our family at all. Not only because I had family in WWII but because it's also my parents anniversary. (I don't think it was intentional. :p )

Hear`s a nightmare for me,..........
It`s the second year the USN cannot conduct cerimonies on an actually Commisioned Battleship......Oct. of 2006,.. the last of three were stricken,...with the stipulation of ...Not Altering Them ...lifted !!
Hear`s a plus,.....USS Constitution is the only Gunship left in the USN....and it`s just down the street a bit !!
God be with those who never knew what hit them that day !!

"Old Ironsides" is still an impressive ship. I love that it's the oldest commisioned ship in the Navy.
When my brother and I were old enough, my parents (both Navy Vets) took us to see the USS Arizona and The Punchbowl. Both are still vivid memories. I remember looking over the side of the memorial at the rusting hull of the Arizona, which was still leaking oil, and thinking that the ship had refused to die.
Oddball, a couple months ago I was in Norfolk and visited the USS Wisconsin. She's so beautiful; majestic. A beautiful combination of power and grace. Thought I'd share these with you - and the rest of the board. :)

Great photos Kamy,...Wiskey looks prime !! Glad to see they`re keeping her fit !! Countless people had to wipe twice when she stepped up to the plate !! I`m a little confused though,...those are temporary, blowable caps on her main guns,...weird for a ship not going anywhere ?? When were the pics. taken ? The grease and plates on the chains keep the unwanted from boarding her too !! She`s ten times more survivable and powerful than her sisters at Pearl. And even today,..with all the tec. advacement in anti-shipping rockets,....there are only a handful of countries capable of defending against her ,...and Iran,..with all their high tec. missles....is not one of them !! Believe it or not,...they are still the fastest ships in the fleet, she`s 886 feet long 40+ thousand tons and can do her length in 15 seconds. They are the most effective method of controling or stopping shipping of any kind.
Old Ironsides is really Old Coppersides. Can`t count how many times I played on her as a kid. Been all over the ship,..before restrictions were implimented !! If you look really really hard,...you can barely find the hits she took,...Navy did a supurb job of repairing them !!
Dec. 7 1941 was the turnning point for the Battleships majesty,....The world thought they were invinsable until then,...The Navy went along with the worlds thinking....to hide the mistake they made by chaining them together !! But the message is still there....Don`t (F`) with that skipper !!

Kamy ~ Thanks for posting the photos. She is exquisite looking!
I can remember being in Hawaii and going on the tour of Pearl Harbor and the Punch Bowl. We didn't leave either place with dry eyes! I left both places with a heavy heart for all the lives that were lost.

Shar, my family and I took the same tour when I was 14 and I remember after seeing the USS Arizona I couldnt stop crying either....brings back alot of memories....

O.B. they were taken last August. She's attached to the Nauticus exhibit in downtown Norfolk. You can't miss her. Just drive down to the waterfront and there she is.

I was also on the naval base and got to see the "Ike" and various other ships. Obviously I didn't take pictures. ;)
For me, the Midway was the most moving. So much history attached to her.

Now that sounds like a trip I should make !! Great pics, reguardless of who took them, I wish I was there !! She`s sitting high to get in that river, Make sure she don`t roll that light !!

O.B., just to clarify; I did take the pictures above, but did not take pictures on the base...for obvious reasons. Believe me, I would have LOVED to grab a couple of some of the big aircraft carriers...but I'm sure that would have landed me a really ugly date with some angry M.P's, S.P.'s...and security officials.
