I am curious as to what exactly instructors will let u get away with in terms of the css form. Between strokes, will they let u submerge and complete a quick, single butterfly kick? Or do they make you stick with the scissor kick the whole time. I could do the css a bit faster if they would allow a quick butterfly or 'dolphin' kick.

i'm sure they are going to want to see it done how they teach it. which involves no dolphin kick.

When we run the PST at the prep course, we want to see a scissor kick. Yes, for a short 500yd swim, you could flutterkick the whole time or dolphin kick or whatever, and get a great time.... But when you're doing a four mile swim, do you think you could keep that up? It's best to swim right... The CSS is efficient, which is why it is used.

So to sum it up, you might get away with it for your regular PST, but once you go to the BUD/S prep course, if you aren't doing the CSS correctly, it doesn't matter if you swim the 500 in 6 minutes, you'll be classified as a blue (beginner) swimmer.
