let me start this topic saying that i do not use drugs and this question is for information purposes only. what are the effects of smoking dope on a person's physical fitness? i have several guys (not friends) i know at the gym that smoke dope once or twice a month. they swear up and down that it doesnt affect their physical performnce. let me know what your guys understanding of this is. my guess is that it would decrease one's performance but in what way?

Hmm. I'm not sure if it hampers your physical abilities because I just blatently do not know. But I sure know one thing, it keeps you from being motivated at things. Well from what I see from everyone I know that smokes weed that is the impression I get.

borus is right, it definately makes you unmotivated. but as far as limiting physical ability, no doubt you are better off without it. But i happen to know a few college football players, who are EXTRAORDINARY athletes, and they also happen to be habitual weed smokers, but they can still run fast 40's, fast miles, tremendous vertical leaps, and so on... but, think about how much better it could be without putting smoke into your body.

Mostly anything you put in your body that shouldnt be there......is not good for you. Smoking anything damages your lunges. Every time you do anything your not supposed to be doing, sets you back just a little more each time. They may not realize it now but they will. Had a friend and this is the god honest truth.... was just diagnosed with lung cancer. He smoked like twice a week like alot of people do. Kinda recreational like alot of people i know. Problem is.......He's 17. Bad luck can kill you

Yes it damages your performance. Is it noticeable? Depends on the person and how fit they are. Lots of people do extraordinary things while doing potential detrimental things to your body. Ever get drunk? That's not good for you either. the effects of casual marijuana use are generally less severe than a heavy night of drinking on your body as a whole but different chemicals in your body affect different organs. Everything eventually gets metabolized and removed. With casual use all substances are fully metabolized within 72 hours. I wouldn't recommend smoking pot but I drink occasionally and that's not good for me either. The bottom line is that everyone does things to their body that is harmful at some point. Even if it's as simple as eating fast food or lots of sugar. With proper exercise and responsible care of ones body the effects can be minimized.

As others already mentioned, it damages your brain (which affects motivation) and damages the lungs. How can you perform your best if you have problems with breathing? Here is a link to the experts, the National Institute on Drug Abuse. It's a lot of info, you have to scroll down for the physical effects on the body.

Hope this helps.

Jen---great post! Its good that we have professionals on board to let us know the facts.
Look---Marijuana is a bad thing mostly because of the SMOKE! Generally people don't filter marijuana smoke, so it is ingested raw. This is a horrible thing-----anybody out there that smokes the stuff do this. Blow your hit out through a napkin or a handkerchief and see the stain it leaves. Think how that affects your lungs.
I don't think the drug is as detrimental in and of itself, but the effects of the smoke are very bad.

Sooo what are you saying? They should show up at BUD/s half drunk? Hmmm, . . . looking at it at a purely medicinal viewpoint, it can work. If cold is the problem, alcohol could be the perfect solution. . . . think of how it can give you a warm, fuzzy feeling. . . especially the strong stuff like scotch !
Seriously, weed and alcohol can't be compared. Weed is inhaled while alcohol is injested. Alcohol goes through your body's natural filter (liver) before going to other parts, like the brain. There is also a scientific study that showed several glasses (forgot how many) of alcohol/week can actually decrease heart disease. . . . not that I'm condoning drinking or anything. I'll see if I can find that research.

Nah....not saying that at all......guess what I was saying is that if you are hard/tuff through and through.....there ain't nothing that hurts you!! I'm sure you'd be much better off without either.....although....we did our share of beer drinking and it didn't seem to hurt.....guess your bullet proof when you are in your 20's and in the TEAMS!! ;)

Pot has been a bodybuilding "secret" for years... schwartzenegger is smoking a joint in the end of "Pumping Iron". It increases your apetite tremendously, and more food = more mass, and when a huge clean diet is coupled with a good training regimine, you can pack on a ton of muscle. Now that doesnt mean that you need pot to get big.
But then you have to remember, these guys arent known for their intellect... hence the term "meat head", so they have nothing to lose when smoking dope. SEALs don't need a ton of mass, they need endurance; both musclular and cardiovascular. Weed smoke, just like any smoke, is harmful to the lungs and will hinder performance greatly. It also, like mentioned above, reducess motivation... and you will need a lot of motivation when you are 3 days into Hell Week and you welcome the thought of a .45 in your mouth.
I'm not sure about this, purely guessing, but I would think the Navy would give you some kind of drug test to become a SEAL, so would you want to risk that over a quick high? I think doing any drug it is stupid and not worth the risks.

You're right Sea, . . . . I was only joking and sort of got carried away. Alcohol is just one of those that has to be consumed in moderation otherwise can do harm and can be addicting (alcoholics). I couldn't find that research I quoted, but if I remember correctly, it was only 2 glasses/week of alcohol that can decrease heart disease.
I'll follow your advice and move on . . . .

I heard it was a glass of wine every night with dinner helps decrease heart disease. But I dont know about other alcohols.

"Over the past several decades, many studies have been published in science journals about how drinking alcohol may be associated with reduced mortality due to heart disease in some populations. Some researchers have suggested that the benefit may be due to wine, especially red wine. Others are examining the potential benefits of components in red wine such as flavonoids (FLAV'oh-noidz) and other antioxidants (an"tih-OK'sih-dants) in reducing heart disease risk. Some of these components may be found in other foods such as grapes or red grape juice. The linkage reported in many of these studies may be due to other lifestyle factors rather than alcohol. Such factors may include increased physical activity, and a diet high in fruits and vegetables and lower in saturated fats No direct comparison trials have been done to determine the specific effect of wine or other alcohol on the risk of developing heart disease or stroke."

Hey guys. I have two questions:
First, my sister told me that THC will decrease testosterone level. I don't really care if my sperm count is lower, but here's the other info she sent me. This might be propoganda, but I thought I'd ask.
<Wall of Text Incoming>
Studies consistently show that marijuana interferes with growth and reproductive hormones. This is of particular significance to developing adolescents who are going through a very vulnerable period of rapid and complex biochemical changes.
The chemicals in marijuana affect the parts of the brain which control and regulate the sex and growth hormones. In males, marijuana can decrease the testosterone level. Testosterone is a major growth hormone and is essential to the completion of the growth process in young males. This process, including the broadening of shoulders, enlargement of muscles in the chest, biceps, and buttocks, deepening of the voice, beard growth and genital development, is dependent on adequate hormone levels. For a long time parents and physicians have described the typical male "pot head" as having narrow shoulders, lack of muscle development (particularly in upper arms, chest, buttocks and upper leg), pale looking face and heavy-lidded eyes. Pediatricians and endocrinologists report increasing cases of pubertal arrest which seem to be marijuana- related. The occasional cases of enlarged breasts in male marijuana users seem to be triggered by the chemical impact on the hormone system.
Regular marijuana use is also associated with a decrease in sperm count and sperm motility, as well as significant increases in abnormal and immature sperm. In many of the sperm, the transmission of DNA is altered and chromosomes are rearranged. Recent animal studies have raised serious concerns that chromosomal aberrations and genetic mutations may be transmitted from the father to the next generation of male offspring. Marijuana is a contributing factor in the rising problem of infertility in males. Young males should know the effects and potential effects of marijuana use on sex and growth processes.
I'm 15 and I have been working out and running for about 5 months now, and don't want marijuana to hinder my muscle growth.
Also, has or does anyone use a vaporizer? This would eliminate the smoke element of marijuana.
Thanks for the info.

THC most definitely reduces your serum testosterone levels. This has a whole slew of negative effects...reduced muscle mass, increased adipose fat disposition, reduction in strength. All very bad things for someone training to be a SEAL...not to mention illegal. used once in a blue moon I would think the negative physical performance aspects would be minimized. But, imho it's simply better to stay clean and train hard.

THC also slows down the body's metabolism quite dramatically, then you get the munchies then you stuff yourself and then pass out/fall asleep, hmmm sounds like a sumo wrestlers diet, Check it out:

Don't they give you a drug test before you sign up anyway and can at any time while you're in?
And I train quite a few male athletes who drink too much. It's frustrating as hell when they could be further ahead if they weren't drinking all the time. For all of you beer lovers out there.
Alcohol is 7 empty calories per gram PLUS all the crappy carbs in the beer!

I don't know about that man. Being a member of the United States Military means you live up to certain level of standards, whether someone is looking or not. People can throw all the facts they want around, it still does not make partaking in that behavior legal.

In the realm of body building, taking a couple puffs can benefit them by relaxing their muslces, but more importantly it stimulates their appetites so they can pound down 9,000 calories a day of dried chicken with Mrs. Dash.

take a hit, hold it in, place napkin over mouth and exhale. Napkin will be dark where your mouth was opened because of the tar in weed. This tar was in your lungs.
Of course, smoking once in a blue moon is not going to permentally hinder your lungs, same as drinking occasionally isnt going to give you liver disease. Personally, i dont smoke nor drink because my father was a heroin addict who started off with pot in high school and i have grown tired of alcohol. I think if your training for something that is physically demanding, any edge you can get you should take. Thats why i like to eat very healthy so my workouts are a progression instead of a catch-up.

People, whether your trying to become either a SEAL or an investment banker, we will always have a certain vice that is hard to kick or detrimental to ones goals. In my experience, and through others i have writnessed, weed in moderation is much less detrimental than alcohol. I would not recommend smoking anything at least 6 months prior to BUD/s. However if you do feel the need to smoke a bowl/joint or drink, do so in moderation. Make a mental acknowledgement of how much healtier you are, for every time you pass up smoking. Think of it as, 'part of your new workout routine,' rather than passing up on a fun time.
Best of luck to all of us SEAL/SWCC hopefulls.

everything is good in moderation?? Thats why people die off cocain when they first try it. I think if your dumb enough to risk your seal contract to get a little buzzed off some pot then you don't deserve to be going to buds. But if some how you make it into buds we can just count on you fags ringing the bell first. You wanna be a seal/swcc/diver/airr, $hit even a sailor. You need to let go of that crap. I know I wouldn't want some guy covering my six to be some kind of retard because he's smoked himself stupid. If your questions on this website consist of stupid $hit about pot. You shouldn't even be looking into the seals. If you don't have the mentality to let go of something so childish, then like the guy said beofer me.. Good Luck because you weak asses will need all you can get.

Idk about dope, but tobacco has had no effect on my Dad...
Hes halfway to a hundred and he started smoking when he was in boot camp when he was 17...
Back then guys that smoked got occasional smoke breaks and got to get away from the DI's; in an effort to get away from them, he started smoking...
He ended up graduating Honor Man, and can still at his age pump out a 20:07 three miles...
I know its just my genetics (Me and everyone in my family has lungs of diamond coated steel) but I'm sure there are others out there with super lungs like mine too...
But dont smoke. Its bad; Ive never smoked or drank or done ANY drugs (Except my prescribed painkillers which put me into withdrawal after becoming physically dependent on them) and I'm ok...
I don't know about you, but I'm not throwing away my life or risking my health on dope...
