Hello I am looking to buy a good solid mask/fins and so on. I am also going to buds in the next few years and It wouldn't hurt to get dive gear that SEALs use. I have been looking a http://shop.navyseals.com and there is Rocket Fin Dive Kit, Rocket II Fin Dive Kit, and the Duck Feet Dive Kit, what is the difference between these sets? And which do people most prefer and which to do you use in buds.

Thank you for your time and consideration
Tommy

Also do you need booties or the shoes to wear any of these fin sets?

people usually say the rocket fins are even harder to use than the duck feet. so off of that i would say get the duck feet. get the booties too.

By harder do you mean like.. they are heavy and weigh you down or what?
Which booties do you recommend?

Duck feet are for surface swimming, rockets for diving. Both work your legs.

It depends on what youve used and how long you have used them for. If you have never used rocket fins (or duck feet for that matter before) hop in the water, do a few lengths of the pool doing the CSS and you will see exactly what i mean. They will strain parts of your feet and legs that you never knew existed. Realistically if you are training hard, they will all work your legs in much the same fashion.

If you are planning to go to BUD/S, very simply, swim, as much as you can, get competent in the water, buy fins and then swim more again with and without the fins. Plenty of posts on here about the swimming and CSS aspects.

Best of luck.

Good advice. If your going to BUD/S, dive school or any Navy waterborne type school, work on your "no quit" Attitude. Many who I even thought would make have DORed...

Thats no joke either divedoc. I just started using fins 2 days ago and I know exactly what you mean about working parts of your feet and legs you never knew existed. Its weird because once I take the fins off and try the CSS without fins it seems like my feet slice threw the water like a hot knife cutting threw butter. It almost seems like I hardly get any propulsion from my feet because they go so fast now. I think it is just getting used to swimming with stronger legs. I am definetly glad that I am trying this out before I take off for BUDs. As for me, I got something similar to rockets. They are generic of course. I got them for 80 dollars I think. What struck out at me was that is said on their discription that I helped sailors from the U.S. Navy drop an average of 1 minute on their 500 meter.

Its not a joke, for all the guys out there, these posts should really reinforce the importance of swimming with fins BEFORE going anywhere near BUD/S. One of the unfortunate aspects is that if you have never used fins, and have no practice using them, you can actually hurt your swim time.

Like everything, you just need practice and hours in the water. It no longer just becomes just swimming, it becomes a combination of endurance, strength and importantly technique. Especially with CSS, your technique is critical to ensure good fin kicks as it is a combination of scissor and straight leg kicks.

For those that havnt seen it, i recommend looking at the following link. It is a great explantion and demonstration of what the CSS should look like, shown by a SEAL.

Just get in the water, with and without fins.

Best of luck.

i have been swimming CSS with split-fins [nature's wings] with mask. Fin swimming helps me improve my CSS technique. Can't explain how.

My weekly swim workout :

2km swim without fins
aprrox 250m with fins

"In the unlikely event", when you get to the Tread in second phase, you will have to use certain fins determined by foot size. Size 8.5 or smaller and size 12 or larger wear Rockets, everything in between wears duck feet. I would highly recommend taking this into consideration.

Wow! Great info. And here i was about ready to pull the trigger on a new pair of rockets (I wear a size 11). Glad I saw this today...i'll change my order to Duck Feet. Thanks again!

I want to buy some UDT Duck Feet for training as well. I'm a little confused, according to the size chart im a size large, size 9-11 for feet. When I choose the size I can only pick between small-black, medium-black, xx-large-black, and xx-large-bb. Which one would I pick from my size? (large, size 9-11 feet), sorry for a dumb question I just want to make sure I buy the right one... >.>

Which do you feel gives more of a workout while treading?
Aren't the Rockets good for distance swims, and the ducks for more of the "tread water" type??
If the Rockets are better for distance swims, does this mean you would travel further, with less effort....compared to the Duck Feet. So then, would it mean that if you were treading water, you would feel more of a burn while using the Rockets?

Fin swimming helps me improve my CSS technique. Can't explain how.

With fins you go faster, which makes form drag is more obvious. It's easier to feel it. So you correct your body position. Then without fins, you maintain this correction and produce less form drag, which decreases your 500M time.

Back in 263 we got a choice of two fins…Ducks or Rockets…I was issued Ducks and I hated them. After a couple of weeks using them, I took a weekend and tried the rockets. I did not see much of a difference in speed. However, Rockets are more comfortable for wide flat feet. Ducks cramp the hell out of your arches. Simply put. Wide feet – Rockets Narrow feet – Ducks. Hope that helps.
