Hey guys,

Im a 21 year old senior at Texas A&M...joining the Navy in May...getting a contract for BUD/s and I currently have a buddy who just finished Hell Week, In my prep I have been able to get my swim time down from anywhere between 9:15 and 9:35...other people Ive talked to is that you should not focus on being a "speed boat" type swimmer, in that one should not foucs on speed in the water, but more endurance and comfort...Im swimming about 45 min a day six days a week, but I was wondering what I could do to get my 500 yard swim time down maybe another min or so...any advice?

Thanks Guys!

kick harder and pull harder and glide longer. bump it up to an hour or two and make it 7 days a week. The more time you spend swimming in the water, the faster you will be, and the more comfortable you will become.

Ok yeah thanks, I was just about to bump it up an hour this comming week, do you think I should also maybe get into the weight room and bump up my leg strength? Im already anywhere between 185 and 195 lbs and I fear to get to much heavier...but thank you for the advice!

i'm about 180 now. some people say to do weight lifting, some dont. I say do the BUD/S Warning Order and do it religiously. Push up, sit ups, dips, and pull ups, that's what you are going to be doing in BUD/S, so why f*ck with all the other ****. It seemed to work for the SEALs who graduated. And you just keep at in the pool, swim like hell, you get out what you put in, so put out. You're legs will get stronger.

Also you can do 60 sec sprints, where you try to swim down and back in 60 sec and take a 30 or so sec rest then do it again. We do that for pt usually we do that for 500 yards, sometimes a little more, but we do it after we warm up with a timed 500.

hey ag--

just wanted to throw in a thought:

i swam with a girl (grad student at the time of the swimming), who swam undergrad at tamu. great swimmer.

you can always go to the coach in his office hours and ask for advice, or, if you can put it into your schedule next semester, add a 1hr swim class.

and-- there's another guy on this site who's at tamu right now, and i can't remember when he's shipping out. i want to say if not jan, then possibly may. if you want, pm me your info, and i'll see if i can get it to him so that you guys can train together after bonfire. <cough, cough. which i've never been to.>

hey, why don't you start acting like a team player. We're here to support each other on achieving our goals. We're not here to cut each other down (unless people are full of sh*t saying they run 150 miles a week or w/e)

To help lower your pst score and general cardio you can do sprints like joshdupre said but set a goal for each set such as 50 meters in 1:15 or 1:05 depending on your level, and the time you have left over is your rest time. So if you finish in 45 seconds then you have 30 secs (or 20 seconds) to rest. Do as many sets as you can do until you cant make time anymore.

aaah Nihilo, my son. Hopefully when you go to BUD/S you will have grown, and not wish bad thoughts among your fellow hopefuls. I thought I raised you better, but alas, there is still time my son.

Another good swim work out we do is again we swim the 500 for time then we fin up and swim 3 laps face down with snorkel, 3 laps face up, and 3 laps on our side. Then pushups and flutter kicks, then we get 2 shirts and we hold them in the center of the shirt and swim freestyle smacking the water with the shirt. When we get to the other end of the pool we pass them off to next guy and we all swim with the guy with the shirt to the other end etc. After several laps like that we treaded water. Rotating a 12lbs. weight belt between the 3 of us. After that we done about 10 or so sets of pull ups and planks in between. That was our workout for this morning. Since I've been following the Dive Chief at the pool my pst scores have gotten a lot better. Oh yea we also did lungs with our mask filled with water.
