I use it because I can complete 25 meters with 7 strokes. That is 140 strokes per 500 meters, and I'm not even really tired. I can still easily get my 10 - 11 meter under water recovery push off the wall. Where as it takes me about 10 - 13 strokes of breast stroke, and over a mile if you do roughly 12 - 13 (mile ends up being 780 strokes with 12 - 13 strokes, 7 strokes is 420 thats about 90 percent more lol) strokes per 25 meters you are doing 360 extra strokes...dont know about you but they can keep those 360 extra stokes....it's just a smaller stroke plain and simple. If you think about it you don't really have as much force propelling you forward. Plus it's more apt to have your head popping out of the water with a "please shoot my face" sign right on your forehead. Where as with the css the only part that is suppose to come out of the water is when you turn your head side ways and about two inches of your mouth come out so you can take a breath then its right back under water. I use the breast stroke when I am just completely dead tired and winded to hell and am having trouble just staying afloat and thats not very often.

Frank,

I personally swim using the CSS for the following reasons:

1. It is an easy stroke to use - the pull phase is a modified freestyle
2. It is an efficient stroke over long distances thus reducing the amount of energy you expend which is of particular importance when testing for the PST or if you make it to the TEAMS on an op
3. The breast stroke for me primarily stresses my chest and shoulders which pre-exhausts my chest thus reducing my ability for max pushups which is the next test on the PST.
4. While the CSS uses the upper body you are also using your legs for a good amount of power. And the run portion of the PST is the last test in the PST allowing your body some recovery time.
5. There is an amount of recovery built into the CSS more so than the Breast Stroke.
6. I have heard that alot of swimming in BUD/S and in the teams is with fins. Swimming with fins using the CSS is very simple and you can move. I would imagine that swimming with fins while using the Breast Stroke would be difficult...

These are just my opinions as I have not been to BUD/S so take it for what its worth.

You can't use breast stroke at BUD/S....so why would you not beat the test the way you will have to....when you do your class up test at BUD/S!!
