from what water depth do you have to ascend exahling and ascending slower than the speed of your own bubbles ?

They practice it in the 50 foot water tank...and I believe they do the whole thing

hopefully no one will tell you that here. you doing it at the wrong depth can create serious medical problems, so you'd be just as good googling your answer as you would taking it off here. if you want to practice it, do it from any depth you want. never exhale forcefully upon ascent, either.

Is that true only for compressed air or regular air above the surface

If you take a breath of air at the surface you can go as deep as you want and come up as fast as you want. However in BUD/S you will be breathing air at the bottom of the tank under that bubble thing. The air is exactly the same as the surface air but your lungs are compressed and they take more air to fill them. So if you go up fast your lungs will "explode" because your lungs are not being compressed any more and the air expands. Some kids have died breathing out of a bucket at the bottom of deep pools and then ascending to quickly.

lol, that's why the have an instructor just above you with a hand on your shoulder watching you intently. and if you f*ck up, they send you back down. its serious $hit, and yea, it can kill you...

its serious $hit, and yea, it can kill you... called the bends

the bends is where you have too much nitrogen in your blood stream and it is when you are 60 ft. or below it in the water using scuba gear.... if you come straight up from 60ft youll get the bend and need decompression and could die. Or the air pushes through your blood vessels and get an air embolism....

Your lungs "exploding" is where the lungs blood vessels explode and burst which cause you to spit up bubbles of blood and all they can do is watch you die....

not being an a$$ just dont want you to be misinformed.....
