I noticed that when I run at the track, I find it hard to run a mere 3 miles. I get tired out really fast and my form goes to crap. But when I go running around the streets and desert trails of my city, I can run forever and keep really great form, breathing, etc while doing it.

Does anyone else think that running at the track is more difficult than cross country running?

yes. I hate running on a track. No idea but I get freakin exhausted running even a mile. It's because its so damn boring dude. All you have to think about is that next quarter. That is so boring. Only time i run on track is when im doing quarter sprint training for the 1.5

Haha, yeah it might be that it is boring. Its just weird that I can run so much further and harder when I'm not on a track...

Our Kinesiology dept had a study on caloric expenditure and different surfaces. Results: Studies prove running on the grass, dirt, sand is more taxing to your muscles due to the higher calorie expenditure than asphalt, mondo (track). This is because you will be working more of the smaller muscles/ligaments from trying to balance yourself on the uneven/softer surfaces. You work a lot harder trying to apply more force into the ground to move forward.

As far as over use injuries go, you will get shin splints far faster on the track/asphalt than grass and dirt. Sand is bad for shins too, but since you can't avoid it at BUDS, it is best to start slow with less mileage and then build up a tolerance. Also try the compact and wet sand before graduating to soft sand.

When I run distance on the track, the mind wanders. You notice smaller things going on in your body like, I really don't like this or wasn't I just here 65 seconds ago? At least the dirt gives you something to pay attention to like dog poo. Also, the track is level. Everywhere else, elevation comes into play whether in your favor or not.

It's most likely a mental thing. I'm a long distance runner. For me, running 20 miles across several towns can be pretty exhilarating, especially when there's good scenery. Running 20 miles on a track would be torture. Even running 3-4 miles on a track would be pretty tough unless it was some sort of timed workout.
