View Full Version : Drinking water while swimming?

My biggest problem while doing the CSS is that when I turn my face back in the water after a breath, I get water in my nose, as some other people experience. I breathe out of my nose to help push the water back out, but when I rotate my face back out of the water for another breath, a little bit of water that was still in there, is forced back into my sinuses, and I eventually swallow it. After awhile, like maybe a pool length or two, I get an uncontrollable urge to burp from drinking all this pool water in through my nose. I try to hold it back, but I usually end up with several huge burps right in a row that totally throws my breathing rythm off and nearly causes me to inhale a ton of water if I'm underwater when the burp comes. I can't seem to get away from it, i guess its my inhalation technique or something. I inhale through my mouth even, but the water still gets in there somehow. Plus its embarassing when the hot blonde lifeguard sees me come up after a pool length and nearly vomit pool water.

HELP!

Thanks

Are you exhaling the whole time while your head is under? If not, try that. If so, get with you local mentor.

you can burp through your nose while underwater. Usually when I co swimming I will have eaten something an hour beforehand so I am constantly having to burp, and i used to have to surface and stay there while doing normal SS until the burp came, but now i just burp through my nose while underwater. it's very easy.

Also, the second my head rotates back into the water i begin breathing out through my nose.

exhale until your nose/mouth is out of the water. as soon your head goes back in, begin exhaling. exhale the entire time your face is under, even when you're turning your head.

you can do all kinds of stuff under water: burp, cough, sneeze, etc., as long as you make sure that air is going out.

Cool, I'll try some of these techniques. Thanks.

BTW, the lifeguard is some Captain's daughter I think, and I'm kinda married. :)

if you have any more questions, pm me. i'm a swimmer, and i used to teach this stuff way back in the day.

I have sort of the same problem, only I am actually drinking the pool. Everytime I breathe, I get some water in my mouth and end up drinking a bunch by the time I'm done... and I have to stop and burp every few laps.

well i would suggest not doing that anymore, lol.

i dont know how long youve been swimming but as you become a more proficient swimmer the problem should solve itself. eventually youll find that as you rotate your face back into the water no water will enter your nose, until then continuously exhale out of your nose as your face first enters the water. and just as your face breaks the surface of the water when you come up for a breath exhale whatever is left in your lungs out your mouth, this will create an air pocket and your mouth will be open ready to inhale right away.

In BUD/s you'll learn how to "breathe through the water" meaning when you turn your head out of the water there's probably going to be some water splashing around (expecially in the ocean), you learn how to breathe the air and spit out the water. Someone explained this to me before I actually learned, the bottom line it you just become more comfortable in the water as time goes on and your body figures its own way of getting water out and air in.

Hey one thing I recommend while doing CSS is wearing a MASK. If you wear a mask, (which you will wear in BUD/s) you will A. get used to wearing a mask, B. Block your nose from uncontrolled water and air, and C. Look awesome

Anyone help with breaking a plateu with swimmng? I am stuck at 7:30 and really really want to break 7, Some of the other guys here are breaking 7 and I need to get more competitive as with them I guess.

i used to have the same problem. eventually your nose seems to make an invisible seal (best way i can describe it) while under water. as long as you only use your mouth to breathe this "seal" will stay intact. Also try exhaling just as you rotate your face to break the water, this seems to blow the excess water away from your mouth. I dont know if these are the correct methods but it has worked for me so far.

well I tried your advice today and it worked! Thanks!

My suggestion if you cannot solve your problem is if drinking pool water bothers you, you can condition yourself by slightly chlorinating your drinking water. So whenever you drink pool water, it will have no effect. Just my .02.

P.S. I hope you do not take this seriously.

KKlingman are you currently living in Madison? I use to live in Fort Atkinson just 45 minutes away and I use to go to Mad-town all the time.

Sorry to get off topic.
