I am on the rowing team at my college and every weekday we workout fairly strenuously. Two days a week in the morning we go out to the lake for water practice and one day a week in the morning we have what we call heavy games, which basically is 45 minutes of non-stop kill our legs and throw some pushups and ab work in until the whole team is dead and sore. Every afternoon we run and do pushups and ab work, stadium runs, mostly conditioning stuff, and sometimes we go use the rowing machines.
I say all that to ask, is it feasible, if I even had the energy left, to try and combine Crossfit workouts with all that I do for rowing? I plan to supplement swimming a couple days a week when I don't have to row on the water the next day, and weekends the Crossfit stuff will give me something to do, but besides that I really don't know if it's smart or possible to try and kill myself by doing two workout regimens.

are you planning on going to BUD/S or no? You're going to need to do a lot of running if so. give the crossfit workouts a go for about a week or so. if you're too sore from the crew workouts and the crossfit, then tone it down.

I row for Auburn. I just started this semester, though.
I am planning to go to BUD/S, kling, but I still have 4-5 years to work on my total fitness level, so I'd like to be in very, very good shape by then. I actually have been wanting to run more, I just don't know any enjoyable spots to run around here. I ran cross country in high school and I love distance running in general.
A question about running in boots: does it matter the type of boots? Would any type of hiking boot be fine or is it better to go ahead and try to get the Bates 922 (I believe that's the standard BUD/S boot?) for practice with boots?

run on a treadmill, it's boring as hell, i know, but it gets the job done when there aren't pretty things outside to look at. I would get the Bates 922. What's good for the BUD/S students is great for those of us wanting to be BUD/S students. Plus I think, in general, most hiking boots are for just that, hiking. They're not for putting on countless miles.

I'm not a fitness expert (I'm a college student like yourself), but I'd say working on the same body part/functional movement strenuously twice in a day is not good. For example if you did a real tough rowing workout, I'd stay away from pullups for that day. Go run, do squats, or something like that. Running, even tough running workouts, won't really hurt the rest of your body so much so I think it's safe to do it 6 days a week. On the other hand, I don't think it's a good idea to do pullups 6 days a week because you'll be overworking your muscles.
Also make sure you give all parts of your body rest. Not sure what your practice schedule is like but your muscle growth will be much slower if they are going at it 7 days a week.
It may not be such a bad idea to do a scaled-down Crossfit WOD after a long practice. Last night I did the "Angie" right after I was on the rowing machine, and my time went from under 20 minutes to over 25 minutes because my arms were so tired from the machine. Maybe in that case you could do a half-Angie or something like that.
That's just my two cents for your situation. Like I said I'm not an expert but that's how it would seem based on my experience.

on the subject of the bates 922, my mentors advice was to soak them in water when you first get them, then run in them. this will soften the leather and form the boat to your foot as it dries.

I'd rather run circles around my apartment complex than run on a treadmill, treadmills are hell, I just can't do it. I can't get my full stride, I don't like the impact on my knees, they're boring, and it just has a strange feel to it. But I guess if worst comes to worst, a few miles wouldn't hurt, however hard they would make me cry.
Supplemental running and scaling down crossfit workouts on days we don't row probably would work, I'll just have to play it by ear. I've never had an injury from overtraining and I really don't plan to, so I'll workout hard, but try to be smart.
I have an IOU from my dad for a pair of boots from my birthday, might as well make them good ones. Soaking them sounds like a good idea, anyone else heard of doing this?

damnit montstar, why didn't you tell me to soak my boots when I got them a month ago. I had my first blister in about 10 years since I didn't break them in.

i just got mine yesterday and only then was i advised to soak them first, i havent done it yet. but since a retired SEAL, x-EOD and x-rescue swimmer told me to do the same thing i think itll work. either way better to get blisters now then on the first day at bud/s.

My feet are worn raw in a bunch of spots because I don't wear socks in the shoes built-in to the boats. I do it the stubborn man way and just blister and bleed til I have calluses. I figure it's better to have calluses just in case maybe in a race I forget my socks I won't be screwed. Or maybe I'm just dumb, but either way, I like comfortable shoes so I'll definitely have to try the soaking thing.
Where did you guys get your boots? I know they sell them on Ebay, but they don't always have the right size, so did you just buy them from the SEAL shop? And how do they fit, as far as size goes, compared to a pair of running shoes?

i got mine on eBay, they have the best prices. but if you just search bates 922 on google there are alot of places that sell them. but there usually $100+ from these places. the guy i got them from on eBay had most popular sizes.

fit is pretty standard. i wear 11 street shoe, sometimes 11.5. i got 11 in boots, with the dive socks they fit very well.
