I'm stuck between the Aqualung Maui Dive Mask and the Aqualung Quartz 3 Dive Mask. Any opinions on which one I should purchase. My ideal mask would be the Aqualung Wraparound Mask, but unfortunately I don't have 90 bucks to drop on that... All opinions are welcome as usual...

haha, man me and you are cut from the same cloth...

Snow- I'm just using it for swimming my laps, I can't stand goggles, and I've been going with nothing for the past 5 months, now I'm sick of being blind for the rest of the day after I swim. (Damn chlorine) But i'd just like to get used to wearing a mask anyways

don't forget the flutter kicks with your mask full of water. i haven't tried them yet.

that's another reason why I wanna get the mask...

Not to plug another site (becuase I love this one) but I found a site that sells the aqualung wraparound (90 bucks from this site and a lot of others) for 42 dollars

Snow- what should I do, I like that wraparound, but I'm nto doing any kind of diving until I get to BUD/S, so what do you think I should go with? I know you're the expert on most everything... (Not sarcasm) I'm just gonna be using it for my pool time

haha. is that site called ebay?

honestly, if you're simply using it for comfort, b/c you hate goggles and can't stand the chlorine, just buy a cheapo one so that you get used to having your nose covered, and your vision limited in a different way than goggles.

see, when i go to BUD/S, this is what i'm going to do:

think about this: you're going to go to BUD/S. you'll pass indoc, hell week, be secured, and move on to phase II. once you're there, and you pass, you'll know what types of diving activities are *really* expected of you, how the surf tumbles you and your equpiment, what it's really like to carry it all around, etc. you'll also be using their equipment.

then you continue to sqt, graduate, and head out to a team. once you're there, you can determine the type of mask that best fits your body and the type of work for which you'll be using it. you'll also have a much bigger cadre from which to draw recommendations than you do right now.

go with a relative cheapie, unless you're already a scuba guy. then, i say, go with one that's comfy for rec. diving as well as swimming.

snow, you really know how to beat around the bush. (no pun intended) and no the site isn't ebay. It is called leisurepro.com and it is legitimate. I am stuck between the Aqualung Maui and the Aqualung Wraparound... The prices aren't that much different...

oh! you've decided to get one of the two, regardless?

well, i guess my question to you, then, is why would you spend the money on something that you may just relegate to the back of your closet after you ship?

i would go to a scuba shop, try them both on, if there's a pool, try them both out, and go with whichever one is most comfortable. seriously. it's your equipment, it's going on your body, and you're the one who needs to be comfortable with it, and be able to trust that it does what it says it will do-- not leak that horrible chlorinated water into your eyes. personally, i like the visibility of the wraparound, but the design still seems high-profile and cumbersome. for that reason, if we have to go with the aqualung, i'd go with the maui. more streamlined, more efficient movement through the water.

now that's the type of response I was lookin for! thank you snow!!!

I agree with snows suggestion to go relatively cheap.....since you won't be using it forever. However, you go too cheap, and masks don't really do their job. They aren't comfortable, they let water in, and they break easily after repeated times in the water.

My suggestion is the same thing I did with my daughter, who's eyes are super-sensitive to the chlorine. (goggles don't work well for her) We went to a store and tried them on! It is a difficult concept to accept in our internet age, but some things you really are better off trying in person in my opinion.

Oh, try a brand called Seal. They are seriously great masks.

Yea, that was the kind I was originally going to get, but there are no Seal masks that cover your nose, and that's what I'm trying to get used to.

I thought the biggest concern for you was that your eyes bother you from the chlorine? Not sure why you feel that you need to get used to having your nose covered. Did someone recommend it?

I know for sure that my son never used a mask preparing for BUD/S.

Illmaxic

yes, the eyes are the biggest concern for me... I guess technically speaking I don't need it to prepare for BUD/S, but as long as I am getting something to protect my eyes from the dreaded chlorine, and since I'm not using goggles, I might as well get the same style mask they use at BUD/S, just to be comfortable, especially because I have never been a goggle/mask person, ever.

and the reason I also want my nose covered is so I can practice flutter kicks with my head in the pool

The SEALs use a frameless dive mask in training... I can't recall the name of it right now. I believe it is Oceanus or something similar.
