Does anybody have some idea how long it would normally take to become proficient enough at swimming to make it through BUD/S? I was planning on busting my *** in college (a year from now) at swimming in hopes of getting in shape in time. Is this remotely feasible?

if you're going to college for 4 years and you haven't even graduated from HS yet, then yes you have plenty of time to get in shape. just make sure you don't put on the "freshman 15" or is it 30? from drinking too often.

Ya it is. A good friend of mine was terrible at swimming and very overweight. He was 5'10" and 225 lbs (not muscle). He swam a 15 minute when he started, after swimming for 4 weeks 3 times a week (mainly 500 yards on his swim days) he got his swim to 9:30. Now to be completely honest he was not trying to go to BUD/S, but he did want to go to Dive school to be a Diver. I guess the main point is you can get in shape if you really want to be in shape and you can get in BUD/S shape if you bust your ***. A year is a long time, get a good work out program where you know that you are putting out 100% everyday (don't cheat yourself! It'll hurt you later on), and get a diet plan that works for you. My GUESS is you'll be in BUD/S shape in no longer then 3 months if you put out everyday like I said.
Hope everything works out.

I was always a good runner and good at PT. Swimming however, was my worst. In a year, I went from barely making the PST swim 3000m w/ 9:30 500m splits. I timed myself yesterday in a 500m sprint and I surprised myself with an 8:44, which completely shattered my old PR.
I graduate college in a year so I have a year more to prepare. I was in the same boat as you, only I didn't focus on swimming and finning till my junior year. With four years of preparation and if you work hard enough, you should easily get your run and swim time both at the 8:00-8:30 range.
