I noticed in the shop that there was a thing called the PowerLung that is supposed to help breathing/cardio and holding your breath under water for longer. Has anyone tried this and seen results?
Also, I have asythma and was wondering if this thing helped with it. And if I can still go to BUD/S with asythma problems.

I'm not a seal yet nor am i in the navy, but as far as i know as long as you dont use an inhaler you should be good. I would wait for a post from a more informed source but it all depends on the severity of your asthma.

No you can't go to BUDs with asthma. You can't even enlist in the military with asthma. I bought the powerlung sport model a couple of weeks ago but have not used it but a couple of times. Shop around and you can find them discount. I got mine for $80. Some places sell them for $140. It might help you with your asthma to a degree. But, that all depends on the person. I am not a doctor so take what a say with a grain of salt. I had sports induced asthma before I went into the Marines. I just ran everyday for months on end slowly increasing speed and then maybe distance. WHat worked for me may not work for you. But, there are little tricks here and there that you can do to help you out that are outside of the mainstream of sports and fitness. But, what might work for me may not work for you. The power lung is not a miracle worker. It is a peice of exercise equipment. The way it works is it strengthens your intercostal muscels in your rib cage that help you breath. It claims that it is the only product that can raise your VO2 max. But we will see. I will give you a report in a couple of months and tell you how good it works. Stew Smith swears by it and he is a SEAL. If its good enough for him it is good enough for me.

I have asthma and did not declare it before I went to Boot Camp. It did not bother me and I made it okay. However, I did have a major epsiode when i was stationed in the UK and was almost discharged. I have used the Powerlung sporadically and I think it has helped a touch. Like the last poster said if Stew Smith endorses it, I believe in it.

One of my workout partners uses it and he held his breath for 3:15 last time we did underwater breath holding. As far as asthma goes, I think that one of the models was initially made for hospital use for persons with asthma who are recovering. I havent tried it though, if I had $80 to throw around for the month I have left until basic than i would probably invest in it though.

3:15? Wow. I know how difficult it is to gauge how much the Powerlung is responsible for that when your partner is also working out, but how much of his 3:15 does he attribute to the Powerlung? I'm always skeptical of a magic devices that claim they can increase breath time, make your underwater swim to 200m, cure cancer, and so on. If your friend swears by it, I might consider getting it to see how it works for me.

He's a very modest kid. His scores for the PST are:
9:00 swim
100< pushups
100< situps
18< pullups
8:30-9:00 run

he's in great shape obviously and he's a small kid. He's doesnt swear by it but he's very modest so... can't really say for sure other than he says he uses it 1-2 times a day. he outlasted us all by about 45 seconds.

I used to have asthma problems, if you do enough PT you will adjust and not have problems anymore. I only have problems when I get a throat cold and even then I don't need my inhaler.

Asthma is your bronchial tubes closing because they don't like the Air. more people are getting Asthma due to poor air quality. Pretty much you got to push through it for a year or so and tell your body tough. I refused to use my inhaler after Freshman year and now I don't need it.
