Hey there people i am enlisting in the royal navy as a mine clearance diver in october and was hoping someone could help me out. I have been told that the fitness level is very high and my fitness is good but i have not found anything about how Mine Clearance Divers should train. This is one of the best sites i have ever visited and know that obviously navy seal training involves a lot of diving. I am currently following the crossfit workouts and alternating between running one day and swimming on my back with fins the next (we are not required to do combat stroke) and taking sundays off.

I am 26 years old 5'8'' and 155 pounds
max chins 32
max press in 1 min 102
max sit in 1 min 67
max dips 38
1.5 mile run time 8min 52secs
1000m swim with fins 26 mins

Solid scores, Taylor. Situps could use a little work- try doing max sets of decline situps if you can find the equipment for it, if not just do more of them. As far as swimming goes- my bet is that you could get that a LOT faster. Try swimming on your side instead so that you can take longer kicks and alternating sides when you need to. I usually kick my top leg to the front and bottom leg to the rear, get one really strong kick and ride the glide for a little while, then take another one.

You're in about the same shape I am (except for the chinups- 32 is awesome), but I can bang out 1000 m a little faster than that without fins doing combat side stroke. I'd reccomend learning it. It sucks without a good teacher but if you just get in the water, focus on staying long and go for it you should be fine. Check for some online videos so you get a rough idea of what to do and then just hit the water.

Thanks for the advice and support when i went to the pre joining fitness tests my bodyweight exercises were good but my fin swimming was TERRIBLE it took me nearlly foty five mins to do 1200 meters in the lake with a dry suite on! So i will try the combat stroke to improve it. Any ideas of any websites where good examples of the stroke are shown as i have been struggling with the fins. Also would you say its needed to do any purely weights sessions (bench press etc) as i just do the cross fit workouts at present.
Thanks again. Taylor
P.S just out of interest what height weight and age are you too.
