- Run more. Build up slowly so you don't get injured, but definitely run more. Someone smarter than me could tell you exactly how much, personally I think 30 miles a week or so is pretty good.

- Stretch out your abs and obliques before you run to help prevent side cramps. If you get them, just suck it up- you won't get injured from pushing through these, and they usually go away after a couple minutes or so.

- If your lungs aren't burning, you're not doing it right. You'll get used to the feeling.

- Time your runs. Push yourself harder every time, and always strive to finish faster than you did the day before.

swim laps. freestyle.

wait a couple hours, then go run.

wash, rinse, repeat for as long as it takes.

your cramps are from not breathing properly and from being out of shape. while there really isn't one way to breathe, try a four-count:

in-in, out-out, as you're running. some people will tell you to breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth-- i've never been able to do that, ever, and i'm a runner. i breathe in and out through my mouth. i *might* breathe through my nose, but if i do, that's not a conscious thing.

the in-in, out-out works for every runner i know, including the marathoners and crybaby asthmatics. haha, just kidding. it did work for my asthmatic running partner, back in the day, and she still uses it.

i find that breathing through my nose is harder but more efficient . On normal runs , *not sprints* i try to breathe slowly through my nose till my lungs are filled and then expire (slowly through my mouth ) till my lungs are almost empty. I also set a rythm for my breathing and try to set a steady pace ..on the last portion of the run i speed up a lot and breathe irregularly till i finish . This works for me :)

i do the four count breathing works ok, no more cramps for the most part the cramps i do get i think are form not drinking enough water. shooting for my 1st four mile run tomorrow. ill post my time after i get done
