View Full Version : Snow... Hyper-extension of my knee

I know this injury isn't training related, but about a month ago I was snowboarding and hyperextended my knee. I started to let it feel better until out of my own stupidity I went boarding again and ended up landing on it wrong for the second time. Since my knee wasn't as strong as it should have been, it seemed to happen on a much easier landing. About two weeks later I was messin around with some buddies and it got twisted up and I heard a pop. It again was sore for a good 3-4 days. It's been about a week and half and it's still a little tender and I can't fully lock it out, or fully clench it (stretch by bringing my calf muscle to my hamstring) without feeling a little pain. I can't run or work my legs out because my knee feels week and is in pain when I try.

Snow... Does this sound like a serious injury, that I need to go to the doctor and see if something is really wrong? Or do you think this is just a hyperextension and should heal up in time? ...and if so, how long would you say it takes for this type of injury to heal? Thank you very much.

S_Man:

can you tell me more specifics about the initial injury? the pop could have been something or it could have been nothing, but you haven't given me enough info to be able to tell.

where does your knee hurt, and what does the pain feel like? what, specifically makes it hurt, and what make it feel better?

i'll check back in later tonight.

Hey Snow,
Sorry it took a little longer to respond. My injury took place when I was snowboarding and went off decent sized jump. I got a little too much air and cleared the down sloped landing spot, and landed on the flats. When I hit I immediatly fell to the ground because of the instant excrusiating (spelling?) pain. My left arm and right leg went numb and I couldn't get up and walk for a good 5 minutes or so. I was helped to the side of the run and sat there for about 15 minutes before I got feeling back. I wasn't able to lock my leg out straight as if I was going to flex my quad muscle because it hurt too much and I also wasn't able to bring my heal to my butt as if I was stretching, because it hurt too much.

The accident the other week happend when a few buddies and I were messin around with a football and got a little too rough. This may sound funny, but my friend had a hold of my left leg at the ankle and was trying to bring me down, when I tugged pretty hard and got free. Because of my momentum and jump I was in the air and came down with all my weight on my right (bad) leg. That's when I heard a pop. I immediatly fell to the ground and had that same pain as I did from my initial accident. It was sore for a few days after and now it's finally starting to feel alright to lock out, but it I can still tell that if I were to land on it slightly wrong I would re injur it.

Basically, it hurts to lock my leg out straight, and hurts to bring my leg all the way in the other way and stretch out my quad. (let me know if you don't know what I mean and i'll try and describe it better.) My leg seems to hurt right under my knee on those two tendons, and the pain was just a very sharp but persistant, and throbbing pain when it happened. Now the only pain I feel is a little when I twist it on accident or try and stretch it out. I hope this was enough... let me know if you didn't understand something. Thank you very much for taking the time to read and help me out. I'll check back later tonight.

right now, before i comment further, i'm going to tell you to go to an orthopedist. you didn't just 'fall', but compounded the forces acting on your body because you were in the air. overshooting and hitting the flats is how people literally break their necks. (tyler mosher, for one.)

you landed upright, correct? and where on your knee did it hurt? was there any specific point?

i know football, grasshopper. i know what you're talking about.
this... is hard to say.

does it feel unstable or wobbly when you walk? does it lock or click/pop at all?

What do you mean by that statement?

Yes, I believe I landed upright, therefore wasn't able to use my legs as shocks when I hit. It hurt right under my knee cap and on the two tendons on the back of my leg beneath my knee.

It's not too bad when i'm just walking around, but if I lose footing or traction and have to quickly correct myself, it feels unstable. And yes, it does pop quite a bit.
