You could combine both, as in sprint during your long distance run.

Yea, so it would be alright to do both in the same say, not to much stress on your legs.

It's called interval training. You are the only one who knows if its too much stress on your legs.. We don't know how in shape your legs are. If you're worried then decrease the distance a for the first time you do it, then increase from there..

Lately i've been doing these track runs that are similar to what you are talking about and they have helped my speed tremendously. You start off at the beginning of a curve and you walk the first curve jog the strait away, run the second curve and sprint the last strait away. then you walk the curve and so on. repeat this 6-8 times depending on how good of shape you are in and then each week after that raise it by a lap or two (if your a BA).

Ive done the same type of thing that you have done for my track practice, we jog the first 250 meters of the track, then on the last 150 meters we would sprint, but we wouldnt go up to full sprint right away, we would do the first 50 meters a 15% speed increse, then at after that 50 meters we would kick it up to 50% speed increase, and then the last 50 meters we would do 100% full out sprint. We would do that for 3 miles, sucks the first time you do it, but it really helps.
When I joined my track team i was running a 8 minute mile, im now down to 5:30, and that was only in a couple of months, so I suggest you join your school track team.

you can, like, do them both the same day, and in fact, a sprint workout will, like, make your distance runs faster. it's like, actually the fastest way to increase your long distance speed.
