Lately when I have been running my 2miles I'll pass "the finish line" and walk about .25 miles or .4 miles to rest depending on what mood I am or how cold it is outside. But as I am walking drinking my Gatorade my hip starts to hurt. I run 2 miles without stoping and it dosen't do it while I am running , I think, and I have arch supports in my shoes but it's been hurting while I walk before I got them. It hurts right at the joint where my leg meets my hip. Has anyone on here had this problem and know what to do if you don't anymore? Do I need to see I doctor before I run again monday if it's going to get any worse? I am 15, 5-9, 156lbs last I weighed my self sunday, if anybody needs this info. To help anybody who wants to help me I would rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10 as a 3 if that it's enough for me to notice but not enought to make me limp.

Are you stretching before you run?

Yeah. I stretch for about 8-10 minutes.

Does the pain stay in the hip, or does it travel down the leg?

It just stays in the hip where my leg and hip bone meet kind of in the joint area, but it hurts for maybe about a 1/10 of a mile and then stops, but when I do my walk it starts hurting again every time I take a step right at the hip joint.

Duckkie -- have you seen a doctor? It doesn't look like you're going to get much help on this one here on the forum.

It sounds to me like your having problems with your hip flexor muscles. Sounds almost like muscle spasims in one of them. The pain would be comming right from the pelvic area, on the front side of your hip area. The salution may be as simple as a lack of proper stretching. You have to understand that even if you stretch your quads. Many people don't set into the stretch enough to stretch the upper quad and flexors in the hip. I'm no doc, but thats my opinion. Look into some proper stretching techniques specifically for your flexor muscles. Also, make sure your patassium levels aren't to low, that can help with muscle cramps. The muscle spasims will be sharp pains, but not constant. I stress this is just my opinion of your problem.

I found a stretch for the hip flexor here is the link if anyone else wants to try it: http://www.easyvigour.net.nz/fitness/h_hip_flexorstretch.htm

Maybe one leg is longer than the other (hey, it's possible). If it is, then maybe an insert under the short leg could help.

If not, then I don't know. I don't stretch before I run. Instead, I jog a mile or so at an easy pace to loosen up, then do my run, then do a real good stretching session. I don't know, works for me.

I emailed Stew Smith about it and he said that he would not run for 2 weeks, Stretch, ice it for 20 minutes before going to bed and take aleve or whatever with each meal

Maybe one leg is longer than the other (hey, it's possible).

Yeah, it is if you had polio, lol. But seriously I started to think that when I was running but I am going to try to got to a doctor to see what he has to say about it.

Well, Duckkie thats all I could come up with brother. The only thing I can tell you is gut it out and deal with the pain or see a doc. If your having problems now, you'll really be having problems when you get older. It might be worth going and having it checked out. Good luck to you!

Haha. ah, burner. last thing we need are more geriatric hip patients, eh?

duckkie--

does it hurt on the outside, like where you would put your hand on your hip if you were standing, or in the front, near the where your leg meets your torso? does it only hurt after you've been running on it?

i never, ever stretch before i run, but then again, i never have any problems. at any rate, the location of the pain determines the stretch you try.

i'm a little slow on the draw. sorry about that.

I think Ihave figured out whats wrong I think I over stretched my ITB cause when I got back from running yesterday I hadn't stretched before so I stretched then and It felt so much better. Seeing as how its my ITB I am not going to run any more this week so I want injure (is that how it's spelled: injur, enjur I don't know) it even more.

kenny,

you would be right. however, my injury isn't from running or from not stretching. after surgery, i won't be able to do either of those things. recovery will be 12 months, minimum.

duckkie--

it almost sounds to me like you are young and a bit out of shape. every ache and pain is not a sign of the apocalypse. i'm not sure how you would have 'overstretched' your IT band....

After having major hip surgery last year, almost one year exactly, i can highly recommend you seeing the doc...

especially at your age.

Well I kinda of talked to a doctor a good friend of my dads is an orthopedic surgeon and I talked to him about it and he said it just sounded like I was over-stretching my ITB like I had said earlier. Now I only stretch it before I run and it hasn't hurt in since.

Just be careful with the ITB, man. My buddy's a diver and he runs and swims daily. He hurt his ITB, took a couple days off, stretched it, and went back to running/swimming with no problems. Few weeks later he ended up going to Medical because of some minor knee pain. Turns out, the Doc said the knee pain was caused by his ITB and was "put" on LLD (light limited duty). Now he's doing physical therapy. No PT. No running. No swimming with fins, no sidestroke--only freestyle w/ little leg movement. No leg exercises--squats, lunges, etc. It's been weeks and he feels like an out of shape Coast Guard Puddle Pirate. It's funny, I rarely ever see people stretch their ITB's before/after a run. Just calves. I also have to start taking it easy with the fins. The tendon or ligament (I forget which) on the front of the foot where it meets the shin--I get pains there after a mile or so. Anyways, just take it easy, bro.

Well I haven't run in the last couple if weeks instead at practice we have been having rock wars and eating blackberrys. So I guess I'll now have an excuse not to run. : )
