Dude, I'm not a SEAL, just to clarify that. If you're serious about the SF (and in particular the SEALs), then being comfortable in the water is essential. It's very common to feel panic underwater because humans breathe air, not water. The mind knows this fact and plays tricks on your body, convincing you that you need air badly and that if you don't surface immeadiately, you'll drown. The real key here is the mind - training the mind to enjoy water, to be at home in the water, not to fear the water. And the best way to train the mind is to be in the water on a regular basis.
I agree with Wetwash. Take a swimming course. Learn to feel confident in the water. Keep your workouts in the water fun to help train your mind. Relax your body, breathe deeply. And good luck, man.

Take a dive course it'll help you relax really good...
Like the others said, taking a swimming course would be a good idea. Id like to add a suggestion for you that may help you feel more relaxed and comfortable in and under the water. A basic SCUBA diving course. Although this is not necessary to learn before going to any spec ops schools (as you will learn it at the schools), for you taking one now should help you feel more comfortable in the water. You get a whole different perspective on the ocean once you learn to dive and your comfort level should increase dramatically. Just a thought....

The best way that I got use to the water was just swimming 5 days out of a week. Eventually your body will accept its surroundings and it becomes second nature. Just spend a good amount of time in the water, and around it. Hope this helps.

when im under water and i start to get a little panicky i just remind my self that air is not that far away and i dont really need it that badly right now. that usually calms me down.
and as a result i can only stay under water for about a minute if im lucky so my question is..are there any tips or tricks that somebody knows that could help me out
you might try running (alot!)get your cardiovascular used to working with minimum air so that when your under water and you think your almost out of air you actuallu have alot more than you would think.
