My name is Jordan, Im enlisted right now in the DEP program. I just recently got back from M.E.P.S, where they told me my vision was not "up to par" for SWCC. Hearing this I've already scheduled lasik corrctive surgery for this week. Untill this is don I cant clasify for SWCC. S my question is to any SWCC veterans or current servers, if SWCC is worth it?....My overall goal to to someday wear the trident but i wanted to join SWCC first to get a closer view at what the SEALs were all about, thus determining if it was for me, unfortunately i have noone to tell me about SWCC, so please....any information other than the seal.mil.swcc site would be appreciated

thanks again - Jordan

Jordan, before I answer your question I have to get some admin stuff out of the way. Please change your screenname. There is a standing rule on these forums that only people who have actually gone through SWCC or SEALs may have screennames associating them with those groups. I appreciate your zeal, but please change it.

OK, now onto your question. SWCC is definitely worth it, but only if you enjoy fast boats and jumping out of airplanes. If you want to get up-close and personal with the enemy, SEALs is where it is at. Honestly, if your goal is to be a SEAL, SWCC is not a road to that end. SWCC training is as intensive as BUD/S and I promise you if you get through it you will think twice about wanting to go through that again. If you want to be a SEAL, be a SEAL.

Now, the best thing about SWCC? You have a small group of guys who basically own a $10,000,000 boat that goes 50+ knots with machine guns on them, and you take them to places no other ship in the Navy can go. You jump out of an airplane after pushing a boat out of it. You hunt pirates... yes... pirates (though they don't wear eyepatches so much anymore... that is sooooo 1780!) You run up and down rivers in South America with Kevlar clad boats and mini-guns that are the equivalent of long range chainsaws, basically able to saw down thick jungle to whatever level you aim at from 300 yards away.

You do much of the same training as SEALs, you work next to SEALs on a daily basis, but SWCC guys are not people on their way to becoming SEALs. We respect them for the job they do, but just as they think they have the best job in the world, we know we do.

Do you have any specific questions about what we do? If you look through this forum I know I have addressed alot of what a SWCC actually does, and a little about what SWCC school is all about. If there is anything you want to know, feel free to ask.

And yes, it is worth it to get the surgery if you are too blind for SWCC. For the rest of you, if you are not too blind for SWCC, hold off until you get through SWCC school (or BUD/S). While in the Navy you can get PRK surgery for free, and SPECWAR are top of the list for the surgery.

Thank you for the info, but there werent any specific questions i have. and i already got the surgery done so pretty soon here i go to MEPS and re-classify as a GM/SWCC. I appologize for the screen name confusion, ill change it for sure. oh yeah, so your saying that whichever SPECWAR area you choose be it SEALs or SWCC, its the one you want to stick with?

Pretty much. I don't think either community wants someone in it that is just trying to get out of the community. You can't go wrong either way, but stick with the one you choose. You will work together when the rubber meets the road. Its all a matter of what job you want when you do.

Kinnikinik you seem to be aware and far more knowledgeable of the SWCC life than most I have attempted to ask, I have a quick question for you and would like above all your opinion on the subject, for I have yet to get a strait answer. So if you will here it is.

Why are there currently no officers in SWCC and why do you have to go threw BUD/s to become an officer in the USN special operations community? Also do you think that there will ever be officers in SWCC and when that time comes will the SWCC trident be Gold?? Also how far off do u see this happening if at all?

Thank you sincerely,
SPEARS

Ok this is a pet peeve for me. I will say this as plain and simple as possible. If you want to be a SEAL then goto BUD/S. If you want to be a SWCC then goto SWCC school. If your not going to be 100% commited to the Team then don't bother showing up. On that note don't think that you can go to BUD/S and if you drop that you can just roll into SWCC. You need to figure out what you want out of you careet and go for it! I just want to make that clear. -- Johan
