i don't know how accurate that is (not being able to push off wall). i have recently done and finished Stew Smith's Complete Guide to Navy SEAL Fitness and all of the swimming exercises lets you use the wall. also, there is a section about swim technique and tips for p***ing the pst-all of which tells you to squat at the wall and push with your legs into a big double arm pull and glide. In the Combat Swimmer Stroke instructional DVD with Stew Smith and Cross Fitness- Stew demonstrates the CSS and at each lenght of the pool he squats and pushes.

I believe you cannot push off. One of the BUDS videos I watched said that you cannot push off. Actually you have to start by jumping feet first and then do a flip underwater before you can start. This prevents diving and/or pushing off when you start.

wow...if this is the case than that really does suck. i have had trouble getting my swim time down to 12:05 with a big push and glide. so at each length are you supposed to touch the wall and flip?

That is what I remember from the videos I have seen and books I have read. I believe you can push off during training but the test were strictly no push.

Yes you can push off the wall during the 500m swim.

The thing your thinking of is the 50m underwater swim. Where you have to jump in do a front flip in the water and then continue with no push off the wall.

And yes you can also p*** people, thats just stupid. And yes the lanes do get crowded, so dont feel bad if you kick someone in the face and slow them down, its gonna happen. And if your smart about it you will make 2 lanes in the lane itself. Over time you guys should spread out, and when your going one way all stick to the right, and when coming back go to the other side. So you will be swimming in a single file line basiclly.

You can kick off the wall, and since a requirement of being in the navy is being a US citizen going down the right hand side of the lane shouldnt be too unnatural.

P.S. Some motivators make you start off 15 feet from the wall, they line you up in the shallow end facing the wall nearest to you and say begin. when they start the timer you dive towards the wall 15 feet away flip turn and start your 500.

the instruction sayd very clearly no flip turns, i dont know why, the only reason you woudl start 15ft out would be because the pool is a bit shorter. yes you can kick off the side. liek stated before the swim you cna not kick off is the 50m underwater. and that is only when you 1st get into the water. once you get to the other side you may kick off.

thanks, that sounds more logical.

I had the same issues. My first time training the instructor had us do the pst to see where we were. He had 6 of us in two lanes. I don't know but it seems a bit retarded to me. I was bumping the guy to my right and bumping the wall on my left. I finished it in 14:46 and was tired as hell. It would have been easier carrying weight and doing the swim. I think they do it just to piss you off but thats my opinion.

Get used to is Salty all your PST's will be like that once you leave for boot. You'll have 100 people in a 25x25 meter pool and hardly anyone can swim in a straight line. It's fun to watch.

But doesn't that turn it into a ME FIRST grabbing and kicking war?
