Yea or Ney?

I've been training for the past few months before i jet for boot. Everyday before I head to the gym I usually grab a Red Bull and a Powerbar until the other day when I left my cash at home on accident and didn't pick up either. But suprisingly I ran my fastest 1.5 mile sprint thus far. Do energy drinks actually help or slow you down?
Also, are there any ingredients in an energy drink that I should look out for or just avoid?
(Taurine, Ginseng, Caffine, etc...)
I also take them before hockey practices and games.
I'm sort of addicted so if you know a good brand that won't screw with my stamina give me a holler.

It isn't the energy drink, per se, that is slowing you down. It is having anything in your stomach that needs to be digested. Digesting anything takes energy -- the body has to divert energy from running to work on the stuff in your gut. If you absolutely need the drink/power bar, eat/drink much longer prior to working out. Doing it just before, no matter what the brand, will have the same effect.

nay.

but if you insist, try redline. haha. no seriously-- if you do, drink 1/2 the can at a time so that you don't wind up going to the hospital.

in case you haven't noticed- you crash after drinking a red bull. there's a reason for that.

if your issue is performance, you shouldn't be addicted to energy drinks. cut that out before you ship, you won't be drinking them there. get used to water, my friend. drink it, like it, learn to love it.

Ya I get it from a gas station down the road. I'm about 30 minutes out from the gym. Should be ok in my stomache by then.

Ya I'm just gonna stop usin them. I don't have a problem with performance (reminds me of Bad Santa, HAHA) but I just want to do as well as I can. So if I do better without it then screwem.

thx guys

Navy 30 minutes isnt still enough for all of that to digest , a good hour would be great! perfect! the redbull would be good 30 minutes before or hey 15 because the cans so small it would be good sip.

The energy drinks that you are talking about contain stimulants. They are artificailly stimulating your nervous system to make you feel like you have more energy. You don't feel like you have energy b/c of the nutrients in the product, but rather b/c of the chemical effect on your nervous system. You might want to think about that and the impact it can have on your body.

If you are going to drink one, the best one that I have found is the RX Energy by Arizona, no carbonation, big, 1 dollar, and taste great.

hahaha , redline is the best thing ! Tastes like crap but it really makes it hard for you to sit still after you drink it.

Regarding the ingredients , some energy drinks are filled with sugar which gives u a quick pump and then makes you crash so try to avoid those. I usually have an energy drink in the morning when i wake up so i feel more refreshed and ready to go but i don't use it for performance. Another thing that works for me in the morning is have a BIG MUG of STRONG espresso coffee ( without sugar and cold) right after i eat something light like a banana. It takes about 10 seconds out of my morning and the bitterness makes it even grosser but it gets the job done. I only do that when i stay up late and i have to wake up about 3-4 hours of sleep in my system .
