I couldnt find a straight answer 4 this in the threads, so i just want to ask... In the PST, can u do normal Sidestroke? where ur head is barely above water, or do u have 2 do CSS? On the other threads people keep asking about Sidestroke and people give answers, but dont specify if they mean SS or CSS. I just want to know is it one or the other or either one?.Any input would be helpful. God bless.

I would like to see this one answered as well, because I spoke with a SpecOp recruiter and he told me you could use regular SS if you want. I wasn't aware of this? Plus, is it that realistic to make very good time doing the regular SS?

8 month bump, but still a good question I haven't seen an answer too.

I think you can do normal sidestroke all you want.....you will just suck. When I go to the motivators for training I BLOW dudes out of the water trying to use normal sidestroke in crossfit style workouts. Because dude think about it. on normal sidestroke your body is like this / your pushing ten times more water rather than your body being like this _. Simple physics. Lifting your head out of the water angles your entire body to be more vertical rather than horizontal. You'd drop dead trying to do normal sidestroke and attempting to keep up with a equally good css'r. It's worth learning even if you arn't required to do it on the pst because eventually you WILL be required to do it.

well said, the sidestroke is alright, but as soon as i became proficient at the CSS, I murdered my old PST swim times with it. 8:45 with CSS as opposed to 8:58 with the SS. That may not seem like a big difference, but when u are in the 8's on the PST swim, 13 seconds is quite a bit. And besides, when I got done doing it with CSS, i felt like I could do it back to back. Conserves so much energy and when you are proficient, it is a pretty speedy stroke.

how in the hell do you do the regular side stroke in 9 minutes? are you just doing it on the one side ill, haha? Do you go as fast as possible or do you try to glide? i bet my regular side stroke would be around 11-12 minutes.

Quick question: I'm at 6'0" 242, 22%BF right now and I'm doing the 50yd in around 1:10 or so. Assuming I have the same swimming skill as now, how much do you guys think my time would improve by simply losing weight? Say I was at 200 11%BF. Obviously I'd be taking up less space in the water and it would take less energy to propel myself.

when i took the pst it was css, sidestroke or breast stroke. i actually went from css to side stroke part way through cuz i sucked so bad lol, but i still passed with 11:34.
