I have a cold. Today would be the day I do my upper body PT, but I'm feeling pretty crappy. A while back when i was talking to "wopr" he told me to just run, swim, and workout through the sickness. I had a hard run workout with my track team on tuesday but I couldnt keep up b/c of the acheyness in my legs. I need to get back in health soon though if I want to stay on Varsity. Competition is stiff, and staying on is a huge mind game in itself. Our coach likes to give us workout that seem impossible. I want to do my push-ups, situps, pullups, and dips right now but Im on the edge. What would you do?

I've had the same problem. I've got a cold and it sucks. I think its best that when working out sick, avoid the cardiovascular stuff like running and swimming. Do pushups, pullups, and situps instead. It's better to take it easy when sick so you won't stay sick longer because then it really jacks you up. But I'm no Doctor, and that's just my opinion. Good luck.

M4--

kid, c'mon now, you know better. if you didn't, you wouldn't be asking here. you're just looking for valildation of what you already know. here it is:

head cold = workout okay

chest cold = workout not okay

chest colds can turn into very, very nasty things. don't do it if you don't have to. being given the 'option' in BUD/S-- that's right there on the beach-- is one thing. doing it now just to prove you can, is something completley different.

just fyi-- back in the day, i went on a 3m timed run with the flu and blacked out as soon as i finished. yeah, it rocked that i pr'd, AND did it dog-sick, but it was a willful thing, not a smart thing to do.

if your coach will let you, take a full day off, go home, and simply pump the fluids and rest. if you're still feeling bad friday, take friday off too. you can EASE back into it over the weekend. your body can't fight off an infection if you keep utlilizing its power elsewhere. my guess is that your coach isn't going to drop you for this, and if he does, running with him isn't that important anyway. trust me-- i didn't play for my high school my senior year and still got what i worked for and what i wanted. regardless of the obstacles you may face, small or large, if you want something badly enough you'll find a way to get it.

Prospectivelybadspeller:

it's not called 'grapefruit knee' for nothin'. however, if this happens repeatedly, u need to go back to ur ortho and ask him what's up. a little is normal, but constantly is not. ur knees shouldn't swell every time you run, and in running through it, u could be seriously damaging what you've got left. 'tough' ()read: stupid) guys who are hard headed end up not being able to run by the time they're 30. u need to pay attention to those knees and have them looked at again or u won't make it through BUD/S. i can guarantee u that.

physical activity does not always help u get better faster, but it does improve your neurological system, so maybe it can help ur gray matter with ur speling.

If you're really sick, then rest. Be honest with yourself about it. A small chest cold you can work through, but if your legs are cramping up then you probably need some rest. The whole point of working out is to make you stronger, if that's not being accomplished then the workout is pointless.

Although I think rest is good/beneficial. Are you going to take a training timeout at BUD/S? Chances are you will be sick in/at BUD/S - do a light workout..

My father used to run when he had a cold because he said running "sometimes killed the bacteria"

Yeah yesturday when I posted that I took the day off from school. This morning we had a time trial... Before we ran I took an advil on an empty stomach. I dont eat before I run because I like keeping my food down. So the time trial was 3 laps, 1200 meters. I was hauling some pretty major a$$. Ran my first lap in 68 second and 2nd lap at 70 seconds. On my 3rd lap I was in first, and all of a sudden I got this rush of some wierd pain. It wasnt cardio. It was undescribable really. It was this wierd feeling tha took over my body. I ended up pulling in at 4:01. I was pretty pissed because I am really competitive. I was shooting for 3:40 or under (4:40 mile pace). My time was good enough in the varsity range, but I couldnt keep up with the top 3 times. I guess I did alright cause I'm sick. So I guess running with a cold wasn't the end of the world. I actually feel better today, but i still feel weak. I guess I'm going to go do some PT after I'm done posting this. I really hate being sick. It ruins everything. Anyways, we swim on fridays and my coach insists I be there. Swimming sick should be fun. I guess we will see how it goes.
