I am thinking about bying a Power lung. Is it worth the money. I need to work on my long distance running capabilties, after about two miles my lungs feel like they're going to explode , will a Power lung help?

All I can say is that it worked for me. It is important that you follow the given workout religiously for best results.

save that money and buy some good boots and BDU's at exchange store or support this site and buy it from socom store. i don't think it will help at all. i haven't tried power lung, but tried many others while i was a music major. the best thing to do in your case is just run ... and run some more. if you can't do more than 2 miles, why not just bring your running speed couple notches down? run slower and longer... then work your speed up once you got the distance you like, say... 6 miles. that way, you can build up the muscles in your lungs so you can run longer and faster. remember this; LSD (long slow distance). do a long stride, slow pace, and work on distance.

also.. i don't think UDTs or earlier SEALs had the luxury of power lungs, yet they made it. if they can do it, so can you and me and everyone else with will, desire and some dose of guts and balls. keep running!

sandfrog, did you use power lung? just wondering. what are your thoughts?

I'd go for it. It definately looks as though it will help. I havn't personally bought one but I've read good reviews and I plan on purchasing it out of the NavySEALs.com store.

Also, try and breathe in when your left foot comes down, and breath out when your right comes down. It helped me from getting cramps and helped my lungs alittle also.

Wow you must breath extremely fast. I would hyperventilate and pass out at that breathing pace. Doesnt the powerlung make you breath slower?

Yeah, dude, you're going to cause someone to pass out.

What I meant is to start the breath on a step with your left foot, and whenever you start to exhale, do so on a step with the right foot.

Thank you for catching that.

I just belly breath (I think that's the term for it) and it helps me get an extra mile in.

The way I breath is I inhale on my right foot, and when the right foot comes back down after the left, you exhale. So the faster you run, the faster you breath.

i think the breathing pace is the same because when you run faster, you have longer stride where as running slower you have shorter stride. you don't run at the same stride at faster pace unless you want to trip over. correct me if i'm wrong.

Dont buy a Power Lung for running. It won't help. Otherwise the whole Running world would be using them. Its a sales gimmick IMO. Also, its like looking for the easy way out. In BUD/s there is no easy way out.

It has helped my running, and I can also hold my breath much longer. It is not a gimmick, my aunt trains olympic swimmers and they all use powerlung to help with holding their breath, and I have also seen major improvement in breath holding.

Whatever works for you bud. I'm just saying you don't NEED one, you only WANT one. And if that was my situation I'd save a buck.

<sarcasm>I think the best and the most useful innovation is the portable music device. It helps me run longer during those boring days by entertaining my mind to forget about running and focus more on my music. </sarcasm>

when it comes down to it, all you need is to run. all those little gimmicks and stuff, who cares if they work or not if you can't run becaus your legs are cramped? in the end, all you need to do is RUUUUUN! so instead of searching the forum about powerlungs, why not get some extra miles in? i think th at'd be more useful. before i first trained, i was doing quarter mile run at 12minute mile and i was out. after extensive running over the months i've been training, i can pretty much run all day at 8 minute mile with no problem.

You do realize if all you do is run, there is no way you will survive BUD/s. I've been running three years straight and there is no way I'm ready for BUD/s. You still need that upper body strength. I'm assuming you realize that though, but the way you put it doesn't suggest that. No offense intended bud.

i was referring to the running, not the entire BUS/S program. I do understand that upper body strength is needed. but my intended purpose for saying this was that powerlungs and other small gizmo is not something someone absolutely need. to get better at running, you just need to run, and run a lot.

also, if you REALLY want the powerlung experience without the $150 price tag, or whatever it is, just go buy some long narrow straws at a super market for $3 per pack and breathe on it. it's about the same. to increase resistance, get a longer and thinner straw (you can't get any more resistance on a powerlung in comparison to coffee stir stick). to decrease resistance, McDonald's straw does well.

LOL, I totally agree with you. Hell if the straws aren't working you could stick some paper spreads in there for extra wind resistance :) .
