I just got in from my first beach run. Im wondering how you guys did on your first beach run? I really had to push myself, and i ended up running a little more than 2 miles on the softest beach sand possible. My feet were digging in with every step.Granted i have a beach 5 minutes away from my house. My friend thought it was odd for a kid thats 18 ,who prob should be out partying is on the beach in camo pants and boots. I was pumped to be running, i felt like i was at BUD/S and it prob helped me out. Anyways..im just wondering how you guys did on your first beach run to know if i have alot of improving to do.

I just recently went to Florida for Thanksgiving Break. My first beach run their was pretty bad as well. We were getting the hurrican aftermath from Miami. I ran in the heavy sand and on the way back I was running into 45 mph wind. It also got me pumped up, but It took me 38 minutes to run 4 miles.

I would just like to say, it is a huge difference from running in the street. Just a forewarning, even if you are a fast runner, running on the street is alot different than the heavy sand with long pants and boots. Its hard to do your normal stride, I almost sprained my ankle several times doing that. Somebody hear said that you should take shorter strides at a faster pace, and hes right if your running in the bad stuff. Maybe the sand is different at Coronado, but hear the beach was torn up with all the footprints and like I said, it's a struggle to keep your balance and not sprain an ankle.

My beach run was alright at first, but painful. I couldn't run too fast, nor could i pace myself well. however, after doign it a bit, it was alright. Now a days, i do beach runs at coronado with 45 pound backpack.

question: how do you guys guage your miles? for me, i just run without thinkign much of how much i ran. i time myself from one point to another with the idea that i'll beat my pervious time. do you guys just zero your trip meter on your car and just drive the same distance or do you guys measure it with GPS device or do you guys actually use a measurer?

You can download Google Earth and measure your routes pretty accurately:

From what I've seen the sands at Coronado are pretty compact, we're not talking Lake Michigan sand. Am I correct?

Hey all,

Ya I live in Coronado and I've been running that beach since I was a little kid playing pop warner foot ball at sunset park and playing elementary school lacrosse there. Our coaches used to make us suit up and do beach runs with full pads on haha. Think you looked funny in camies and boots? well that's normal in Coronado. Try running down the dunes with a lacrosse helmet on, cleets, and a lacrosse stick. haha all the way up until HS our coaches make us do beach runs because it's right there. I remember this one time our lacrosse team was running the dunes and a BUD/s claass was going the opposite Direction. I knew by then I wanted to be a SEAL so i said HOO YAH MOTO! and the instructor said HOO YAH, SEE YOU IN A FEW YEARS!! haha. That was super motivating.

But the sand in Coronado is soft man. REAL SOFT. the soft sand runs are great for you here. When I started doing workouts to prepare me for the Naval Academy and BUD/s, I started out using my heart rate monitor to guide my pace on the dunes, now I do that, with a camel back with weights in it.

Good stuff.
