SWCC Corpsman

I am joining the Navy next year after I finish school in May of next year. I want to get the rate of Corpsman because one day I would like to become a paramedic. I want to try out for the either Seals or SWCC. After looking over the advanced training the SEAL Corpsman gets (which is not the main reason I want to be a SEAL or SWCC). Does a Corpsman on a SWCC team recieve the same advanced training as its SEAL counterpart?

Yes, you go to the same schools. SWCC and SEALs for the most part have the same schools available to them. The key is requesting them and doing the legwork and making the phone calls once you get in to make it happen. The funding is usually there to do whatever you want.

I think the best thing about SWCC Corpsmen is that they are the sole medical source on deployment. The Corpsman is the doctor. We had a 21 year old corpsman on my last deployment who was in charge of all things medical. You will never get that experience in regular paramedic school.

Just a note for everyone else thinking of going SWCC, if you do make it, it is in your Det's best interest to get you medical training, so just about all the training available to your corpsman is available to you. If you complete the prerequisites for a course you can go to it. SBT-20 sends boat-guys to a civilian college for EMT training.

So, one thing you won't miss in SWCC is training. If you aren't deployed you will be training.

K, thanks much for the info. I just got into the DEP two days ago (HM) scheduled to leave June next year. Man I cant wait to go. I hope to volunteer for it when Im in basic. Right now I am learning about the roles of Corpman in different NSW and Marine Units. I am wondering about 18-delta. Do the SWCC Corpsman attend it? Once again I appreciate the 411.

Yes SWCC corpsmen do go through 18-Delta.

As with anything in the Navy, even guaranteed things need checking up on. Talk to your chain of command (the schoolhouse) once you get in the Navy and let them know you want 18-Delta. It is a corpsman thing, but you may have to let them know you want it.

My corpsman on my last deployment was an 18 Delta SWCC guy.
