Streamline Off the Walls
In order to go through the smallest hole in the water possible, you must make your body as streamline as possible leaving the walls. Drop under water with your knees bent and your back straight, then extend your arms over your head and close the gap between your arms and your ears. One hand should rest on top of the other and both hands should be inline with one another. Point your fingers to the opposite wall while locking the thumb from your upper hand around your lower hand, this will ensure that your hands will not separate while streamlining. As you leave the wall your body should be flat with your eyes looking directly at the bottom. As you near the surface simply rotate your body to one side while pulling through with the lower arm as you take the lower half of a freestyle stroke. You should now have one arm extended over your head while the other arm rests at your side as you pierce the water like a dart. When your body reaches the surface simply roll to breathe and begin swimming side stroke.
NOTE: If you plant your feet high on the wall when you push-off your body will head towards the bottom. If you plant your feet low on the wall when you push-off your body will head towards the surface. If you select a spot on the wall that is in-line with your hips you will push-off horizontal or parallel to the bottom. DonW

DonW-
Thanks for the tip. I am going to try to implement that technique into my swim tomorrow and will post back with my results. Thanks again for the advice. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at my workout blog (http://buds.forsecit.com) and commenting with any advice you might have. Please feel free to critique anything I am doing. I leave for boot camp 18012006 so please let me know if I need to step it up a notch.

Jerrad,
Glad to help out. When you go to the pool be sure to spend time on your walls, I just posted a new topic on Turns. You can take a lot of time off your 500 yd CSS swim by getting on and off the walls faster, so spend some of your pool sessions on turns and streamlining. Any questions you have on CSS please feel free to ask. DonW

DonW,

Good news. With your advice and continued training I am down to 9:05 on the 500m. I am going to check out the advice you left on Turns and see if I can't break into the 8's. Thanks for your help.
