Did anybody here of the new program the navy is making?
It's like a naval infantry unit, sounds really wierd to me (since we have Marines, Army, SEALs etc.) but something I would also do, if I go into the navy. Anyone here know what I'm talking about? I'll try and find the link of the site to bring you all up to speed.

Haven't heard anything about it. MK82 is right saying that some Naval Units are trained in some ground tactics. I would like to see what their focus is on. The Marines are there for precisely that purpose, so I don't see what the Navy would need with a Navy infantry. With the large number of Navy Intelligence compared to Marine Intel I could see them expanding the role of Mobile Comm Team and having larger groups that can set up forward operating bases. That would be a nice addition. Keep us posted. I am pretty excited about that idea.

OK, looked it up a bit... first, a little history, the Navy already has a system in place for Naval Infantry. Units such as the Seabees are designated as such when they go ashore. When they go ashore tehy are authorized to show the Navy Infantry Battalion Flag found here : http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/us%5Envbn.html
Now, the naval infantry is not going to be Marines: Part Deux. What it is going to be is an attemp to reinstate some of the ground training that the Navy used to get into certain units such as the MA. There is already a Navy Infantry division in Guantanamo Bay.

And from the CNO's guidance for 2006
Develop adaptive force packages and flexible deployment concepts to include NSW, U.S. Coast Guard, and coalition partners in support of operations in blue, green, and brown water environments that are aligned with the National Fleet policy and the National Strategy for Maritime Security [CFFC, N3/N5, N8, N6/N7]
Identify requirements to organize, train, maintain, and equip a Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. Develop concepts for green and brown water operations to include Level III VBSS, Expanded Maritime Interdiction Operations, expeditionary training team concepts, enhanced combat and force protection capabilities, civil affairs, and Theater Security Cooperation influence activities. [CFFC, N8, N6/N7, DEEP BLUE]

Hope that clarifies some things.

This could be bad...
Well, for the Beachmasters they focus on keeping the
Marines happy, and safe... SEMPER FI/BEACHMASTER ONE
LORD'S METALERS.....
Level III VBSS, Expanded Maritime Interdiction Operations,
Well guys....I've resurrected this old post, because my son will soon be headed off the Little Creek to join up with their MIO group there. I've searched here for all references to these operations and elsewhere on the web, so have a pretty clear picture of what's up, but thought there might be some folks on this site who could expand on their knowledge of Maritime Interdiction Operations or Visit, Board , Search & Seisure.
Any general info on Little Creek, Housing Areas, etc., etc.?
Thanks, Jan

Jan,
Big congrats to your son! MIO is a huge mission for the Navy right now. Lets dive right in.
MIO- Maritime Interdiciton Operations
Operations designed to limit the access to ports of vessels suspected of waterborne crimes (smuggling, piracy, human trafficing). In some cases, MIO could be used to deny port services to a country as in an embargo. Two forms of MIO exist:
Interrogative MIO- MIO in which Naval Vessels call a ship of interest over the radio and verify the ship's information.
Direct Action MIO- This is where VBSS comes into play.
VBSS - Visit, Board, Search, & Seizure
Also seperated into two categories, Compliant and Non-compliant
Compliant VBSS is when a Naval Vessel interrogates a ship of interest and requests authorization to look around. The ship of interest agrees and a boarding party heads over. Compliant boardings are still performed with the understanding that at anytime a compliant boarding may turn into a non-compliant one.
Non-compliant VBSS is the realm of SEALs and other special operations forces. These boardings are on a vessel that has either failed to comply with a boarding request or on a vessel that has enough intelligence about it to be taken down without communicating our intentions. Sometimes these are done via SWCC boats or CRRC's, but increasingly SEALs are using helo's and fastroping on-deck. Both techniques should continue to be taught, since helos may be limited by visibility, or the platform may not be available when the mission needs to go off.
As for Little Creek, if you are single, see if you can get an apartment down on Chick's Beach or in that area. If you are married or want to buy a house, buy in Chesapeake, Deep Creek, or South Virginia Beach. Stay out of Norfolk, and definitely don't live over the bridges in Hampton or Portsmouth.
Also, watch out for car dealerships that specialize in "Military financing." They know they can contact your command if you do not pay, and they charge huge interest rates, or get you in a really bad lease deal. Stick with Company Authorized dealerships, and go in with a preapproved loan from a bank. Taxi's are not too bad in the area, and they Virginia DUI rules are STRICT! Definitely not worth getting caught doing that.
So, I know you posted this a few days ago, but I hope I made up for the tardiness in my response.

Direct Action MIO- This is where VBSS comes into play.
Great response K! Thanks soooo much!
I assume son will be involved in the Direct Action form of MIO, because He is definately scheduled for both the MIO and VBSS "C" schools at this point. He also is hopeful of getting into an additional HUMIT School after those. He has only spoken with the command there briefly, but was given the impression that he would be boarding the vessels.
He leaves SD the end of this month with wife and babe to follow at end of July. They had hoped to purchase a house, but it will depend on pricing and availability in suitable neighborhoods. I will pass on your recommendations in that area. He is very excited about the command. Ironically he had just received word of getting E-5, when having decided to leave BUD/s - this job posted as HOT on Super Jass with E-5 specified.
They already have two vehicles and son has always used NFCU for financing so I don't anticipate problems there. Likewise - drinking, not a big issue - but thanks for the input. Any other specific info on living in N.E. Virginia would be appreciated.
As always your response is very helpful. Thanks again!

Sounds like you taught him well Jan. I think he should be able to purchase a house fairly easily right now. Ensure he haggles, the market is prime for it right now.
And if he needs a realtor, I can suggest a good one. Just email me at kinnikinik@navyseals.com and I can hook you up with her.
