I just pledged into the navy two weeks ago fresh out of high school with an Engineman source rating for SWCC and in a few days I will be doing my SWCC PT to see if I qualify for SWCC school itself...even though its already in my contract it is still possible for me to screw up. Sweet...
I've heard alot of stories about how SWCC are considered the "boat guys" but I have also heard that they do alot of things with other vehicles such as helicopters and even small planes...
First off I was wondering if this is all true.
Secondly I was wondering how exactly do you get into that sort of thing while in SWCC.
thx
(Btw boats are still badass I'm just curious) ;)

Well, we have to move the boats, so we use big Semi type tractor trailers to move them around, driven by the boat guys. We also work with helos quite a bit. The guys down south use helos to drop their boats on the rivers and then they jump out after them. As for other aircraft, we also drop 11 Meter RIBs out of C-130s and then jump out of them. That program is called MCADS. If you want to do that stuff, get through SWCC, go to either San Diego or Norfolk, get your first RIB or MKV deployment out of the way, request jump school and then request the det. I would guess you can get involved in MCADS after your first 2-3 years at the boat team.
Not to mention, simply being Special Warfare qualled will allow you to do things other people can not. For example, if you have not been to SERE school, you can not fly over a water at night or over a combat zone in a helo. Special Warriors cut through alot of red tape simply due to the basic training you receive.

Jump school... well lets just say if you have a choice of Army jump school or Specwar jump school, go for the specwar one. I didn't know you were jump qualed skimmer. Nice to know I have some good company in here. I'll have to buy you a beer one of these days.

I'm not a very religeous man, but I tell you what, before I jumped out that plane the first time I was doing my damndest to make my peace with God.
I went through SERE in California in November. I sympathize with you if you went in Maine, but it snowed 3 inches while I was there. We froze our butts off. What great training!
Have you ever been to Desert or Jungle SERE? I would love to do one of those. Either that or Cold Weather SERE in Adak, AK. I may have to run a chit for that... hmmm.

Yeah, I went through summer SERE in CA too, just outside of 29 Palms to be exact....
I had a shot.... well let's just say I was "invited" to attend winter SERE in Maine... I was stationed in Winter Harbor, Maine at the time....
I was stationed with the wife of one of the winter SERE instructors. During one of his weekend visits, he mentioned to his wife that he wanted me to go pay him a visit in Brunswick, Maine, and help.....
I jumped at the opportunity, but as luck, (or fate) would have it, I couldn't get the Leave approved.
