Hey,
My names ROB, i'm from Coronado California and I graduated from Coronado High School. Currently I am in the NROTC up at UC Berkeley and training very hard to become a SEAL Officer.
I had a question about the Swim portion of the PFT. Is it 500m or 500 yards(450m), and during the swim are you aloud to be wearing your BLACK MAUI SWIM MASK? I train with my mask every time I swim, it's the same one they issue to you in BUD/s. My dad is a Commander in the USN, and all of my friends dads are SEALs and Past SEAL Instructors. I workout over at NAB when i'm home from college and over at South BEACH and at the NSWC.
SO can you use your mask during the swim? Or do you have to swim with nothing?
Thanks for your help
My IM on instant messenger is: Nadolax22
Or just reply back,
Very Respectfully,
ROB

500 yards. NO mask, no googles, no fins, no flip turns.

The way they worked it when I took it was that you could wear goggles if you wanted too. They didn't say anything about masks. I would say bring it with you when you screen and ask them. The worst they can do is say no. It's 500 meters and you are allowed to kick off the sides. At least that's the way it was run when I screened.

It is 500 YARDS. Whoever is saying meters is wrong:
http://www.seal.navy.mil/seal/pst_description.asp There you go "nospin newb".
As for the googles/masks, I was incorrect. According to http://navyrotc.berkeley.edu/resources/regs/pfa/6110_1f.pdf (page 69) you may wear googles or masks, HOWEVER, this document does not refer to the SEAL PST, but rather the PRT. Use it as you will. From what I have heard, you do not get to use googles. It may vary from situation to situation.
And for the "kicking off the wall", I never said you couldn't do that. I explicitly said NO FLIP TURNS.
Nospin: Please go back to 5th grade english and relearn reading comprehension.

You're right. That was my mistake. I always get confused on meters or yards. I just swam the number of laps they told me to swim as fast as I could and didn't worry about the distance. Don't let yourself get hung up on stuff like that in your training. It doesn't matter if it's yards or meters. Just train your *** off and go balls to the wall when you screen and you'll be alright.

That may be true. I screened at boot camp and they allowed the use of goggles. I am not saying that they will do that everywhere though, that's just when I screened at boot. Again don't get hung up on little things like training with or without goggles. If you want to be a SEAL at all you'll get over the little stuff like goggles or not when you screen. Your adrenaline will be flowing, your heart will be beating out of your chest and you'll forget all about everything else but passing that screen test.

I just took it at boot camp a few weeks ago and they didn't say anything about a mask they said get in the water and go.
