View Full Version : A few things i've learned

Hello all, this is my first post on this site, however that doesn't mean i just signed up today, paid no attention to other forums, and made no use of the "search" feature. Fact is i've been looking around at about every available topic there is and have obtained a wealth of information from the questions, comments, opinions etc. of everyone who came before me. Whether or not this post is entirely appropriate for this forum i'm uncertain of but i thought maybe i'd take a few and jot down a few things i've learned from looking around, put them all in one post, and possibly eliminate the need to have things answered or argued over for what seems like an eternity.

Things i've learned:

-You should be in the absolute best physical shape of your life if you have any intentions of making it through BUD/s, you should be able to do 100 pushups, 100 situps, 20 pullups etc. Just to be competitive.

-You should be both physically strong and flexible....find a happy medium

-It is never too early to start training (yes all, i know 8 year olds can't lift 300lbs, unless they're stackin d-bol and deca)

-You should pick a rating you have an interest in, Cuz lets face it if you don't make it, at least you won't be too bored

-You should expect the worst and then some, not to make anything seem easier, but just to be prepared to go through absolute hell to get what you want....(that is....if you want it bad enough)

-You should be comfortable in the water, i mean it is the NAVY and all

-You shouldn't be concerned with all the little rigors of BUD/s afterall thats the fun stuff right?

-You should look at the big picture, lets face it, SEALs don't train so they can look good in a uniform... look at the mental side before you worry about posting a topic on "where can i park my phat pimp ride while at BUD/s???" can you take a life if you have to? are you prepared to give yours up?

- Do you have a family?, do you want one, do you understand the distance that comes with the job? can you maintain? can they?

-Don't go to the YMCA pool and bind you hands and arms, you'll scare the kids

-Don't let the word DOR enter your mind if you do make it there, if you don't make quitting an option, you won't have to worry about ringing out

-Bootcamp is nowhere near as intense as Indoc, let alone BUD/s, you read the posts, so why are you reading this....get to the bathroom stall and start doing pullups, PT as often as you can

-Between Stewart Smith's 12 week, or the warning order, which one should i do?!?! plenty of people made it through all 3 phases without these, use them as a guide, tailor a workout that suits your needs, but know where you need to be before you ship out

-Don't ask your parents for an M-4 for your birthday, you're going to learn to load it, shoot it, reload it, strip it, and clean it the SEAL way, so just be patient.

-Stop worrying about 3rd phase when you are at home right now in the DEP program, take it one step at a time

-It's probably not best to wear Team regalia when you aren't a member of one, regardless if you're supporting the cause, I support my doctor because he keeps me healthy ,but i don't walk around with a white lab coat carrying a stethoscope.

-If you want to SCUBA dive, don't do it just because you have to in 2nd phase, face it, its not the same. do it to get comfortable in the water.

-Don't spend boatloads of money on some survival school, SEAL mock training, just to get a "feel" for it. Remember when you're tired, you can ask the instructor for a little break at these places.

-DO NOT routinely jump into freezing a$$ cold water to "get used" to it.....i mean honestly did i even need to address that, however if you do incorporate this into your workout regimen, go buy a gun and shoot yourself in the leg so if it happens at least you'll be "used" to that as well.

-Do not click on anything posted by Barratiero, sorry bro, but damn....

-Do have a positive attitude, don't come here and post inflammatory, exagerrated, obviously false information about what you heard....or prepare to feel the wrath of Sandfrog

-You will get extra attention with a negative attitude......you DON'T want extra attention

-The average SEAL is 7'2'' 425 pounds of pure muscle, has 3% body fat, eats 12,000 calories and burns them within minutes because calories are afraid of SEALs. They come in all shapes and sizes, the biggest part of them from what i've gathered lies where no one can see. Don't worry about being the exxxxxact height/weight proportion, if you can do the workouts, you're probably in good shape.

- USE THE SEARCH BUTTON. i don't really have any questions to ask on this site due to the fact that literally everything i was wondering has been asked, answered, asked again, and answered again. there's over 1,000 topics with thousands of responses, chances are if you type in a few keywords.......presto, you have the answer to your question.

-If you can afford to live off base, do it, you'll save a lot of special warm fuzzy time with the instructors during room inspections.

-Don't ask stupid questions about what Team a guy is on, if he's ever heard of someone, what he did on his last mission, etc. OPSEC people....OPSEC

-Know how to do the CSS before you ask for a SEAL contract go to basic get to the PST and doggy paddle 500yds

-Don't worry about getting the authentic everything that'll be at BUD/s, go to wal-mart, get some fins and a mask, don't buy a $23,000 Luminox watch because its the official Navy SEAL watch, get a Timex, they work underwater too guys.

-Do buy the movie Navy SEALs starring Charlie Sheen, its the most accurate representation of what being in combat is really like....................

-Muscle Failure doesn't mean go until it gets too uncomfortable, it means do 100 pushups feel dog tired and hurt, and do 50 more no matter how long it takes..........then do 10 more with a 45 pound plate on your back. THAT is muscle failure.

-Don't be offended......learn

I'm sure i coulda sat up all night and threw about 500 or more of these down, but these are just basically the most common topics i've seen. Now for my disclaimer, i'm no SEAL, i'm not in the DEP program, i'm a college senior who came to a site that looked interesting pertaining to something i really want to do. I tried to keep all personal opinions out (some of them slipped in here and there) But my purpose was to paraphrase what others have asked and been answered and toss them all onto one list as a common place of reference to base questions from. Didn't mean to offend anyone if i did, but if i said anything you consider "offensive" you may wanna go out and buy some thicker skin. feel free to add things you've learned or found out or just throw in any random criticism of my post.....i promise i won't get too mad =)

oh and i forgot one more, for you sports fans out there,

-Don't give up, don't ever give up ~Jimmy V

I only have one thing on there that I have to disagree with. The whole live out in the town if you can. Sure in the regular Navy, that's true, but not in BUD/s. I've been told many times that it's better to stay there. My friends class had to get surf tortured and beat down while they were waiting on one of their classmates who lived off base to get there cause traffic was bad. Trust me, you don't want to risk getting that kind of punishment just cause of traffic or waking up late. When you live off base you still have a room there with inspections, so that won't get you out of them. Not that it will matter anyways if your coming in from bootcamp, cause you won't' even have the option of BAH unless your married or coming from the fleet. So you'll be living in the barracks anyways.

-Don't go to the YMCA pool and bind you hands and arms, you'll scare the kids

This has to be my favorite part of this entire post, although I admit, I only scanned through because my attention span = not that long.

I would die if someone came into the pool at the YMCA where I work (sometimes as a lifeguard even) and did this. I would send them straight to this post on the computers in the kids and family room. ^_^

This does however sum up everything on this site, well kinda, mostly... okay the parts that I read...

Hey guys, now, im not a Seal, but by hell i sure want to be one. Im young, 13, but i have the body and the mind of a 16 year old. Ever since i can remeber ive wanted to be a seal, I live in Virginia Beach (next to little creek) so ive kinda been around seals my whole life. My pa was in the Navy, but he was a Pilot. Im in top shape right now and i want to keep it. Im guessing quite a few of you guys are in the Teams, well first off congrats (because yes i do have an idea how hard it is to get into them). Im just kinda waiting for my turn but im ready now, i guess i have quite a while cause my parents are going to make me go to college, so i wont be on the teams until im atleast 23, and by god i will do anything to get on the teams, thats what ive always and always will want to be. And thank you all for defending our country, you guys are the real warriors.

ps.Sandfrog, sounds like your monster mash parties are a blast, i wish i lived on the west coast then maybe i could come! maybe if someone had one near little creek...

hey MERCER,

it's SEAL not Seal. It's an Acronym for SEa Air and Land (SEAL)

you gotta give the real SEAL's the respect they've earned.

OK, first off, no im not a SEAL, but I do know a few personally and they tell me alot about what goes on at BUD/S and in the Teams, What this man had to say in this entry had alot of what my SEAL friends have told me. I am sure its not everything, but it's a good start

Your post indeed sums up the major topics you find in the forums. It was an insight for me, some of them I had heard/read before, others were new to me. You did a good job in getting the information along while throwing in some much needed humor. And SandFrog you're a hero to me son

Hey guys, Im new to the site so give a me a few. I just recently went to a Navy Recruiter and was told that they changed the way you become a Navy SEAL. I was told that you had to go straight into BUD/S, (that you wouldn't even attend Boot Camp, Basically stating that BUD/S Would be your boot camp), inorder to be considered for the program. Is any of this right? They also said that they hadn't worked out the specifics and that it was still under work. But, Im really, really, really, interested in becoming a SEAL. I try to work out every day. And, one mroe question, Does any body know the required ASVAB Score to become a SEAL? Im 16 and I weigh about 170. I have a year to loose all my body fat, and get prepped. Im working on that. (Trying). If any body can help me, It'd be greatly appreciated.

I seriously doubt it. What they were referring to is you would go straight from Boot to BUD/s, no A school.

That means most of the SEAL guys must of look like Big Show from WWE

I'm actually quite scared hearing that :P

Yes, us guys in the UK have the SBS that is equivalent to DEVGRU and SAS equivalent to Delta Force except the SAS are allowed to conduct law-enforcement operations in their own home country if the police can't handle it. The canditates for SBS or SAS would need to serve at least 3 years of Armed Forces before they are eligible for the UK SF selection and training which lasts for 6 months. Any canditates who failed during the UK SF selection and training will be RTU. However, the canditates can be given a second chance but after the second attempt has failed, they can never apply again.

Upon entry into the regiment, none of the troopers can tell anyone else other than close family members that they are member of the SBS or SAS. We also have the newly commisioned SF known as SRR which I heard their purpose is to conduct reconnaissance and their regiment recruits members of both genders. Usually the canditates for SBS are mostly from the Royal Marine and canditates for SAS are mostly from the Parachute Regiment but just like the US SOF, recruits are drawn from all branches of the British army.

Then they are probably self-claimed SAS wannables. Any real SAS troopers wouldn't be stupid enough to go around telling outsiders they're from the regiment otherwise they would simply get kicked out. Even worse, their lives could also get compromised for leaking out their secrets.
