View Full Version : Can I weight lift??

I really want to be a SEAL. I have heard that most people that pass now a days are normally sknnier and lighter guys who are tough as hell. Is it ok if i do weight lift if i can still do more that the minimum amount of push ups, pull ups, and sit ups recommended it the warning order? I do not want to be little when i am older (no offense) , i want to be buff but still be able to pass BUD's.

you can always get buff after BUD/S...you want to be as flexible as possible and if you get really huge, then your flexibility tends to go downhill

That's very true, that is a really good answer. Thank you very much. Do you know if you will have alot of time to weightlift if you pass BUD's and are a SEAL?

It's a little known fact that, contrary to popular belief, SEAL really stand for Sleep, Eat And Lift.

You'll switch from BUD/S type PT to lifting when you graduate.

sandfrog, I always wondered about that. At BUD/S and in preparing for Boot Camp, an Academy, whatever everyone says Push ups! Push ups! Push ups! or Pull ups! Pull Ups! Pull ups!

But...I thought in a close combat situation wouldn't one want to be very strong (what weights will do) as opposed to being able to do millions of push ups? What are you gonna do have a push up contest with the enemy and the loser well...loses.

If I had the choice to have high endurance V.S. high strength, I would have to choose high endurance. Note: Both of these have nothing to do with determination... which I also think has a say in this matter.

If you could choose only one (combat situation), what would it be?:
A_(endurance)to be able to push, pull, run,[and gun] for more time than the enemy.
B_(strength) to be able to press, squat, clean, curl more weight than the enemy.
C_(will power) to be able to eat more potato chips and sit on your *** longer than him.

I would choose C. What would you choose?

Pretty sure SF made his comments about lifting in jest with a dose of sarcasm, but if not I'll expect a verbal kick in the taint.

I'm sure he wasn't.. I know frogs that hit the local gym at least once a day through the week on sometimes pull two a days on the weekend...The fact is people..lifting weights and hitting the gym is part of staying in shape and maintaining a healthy body. Pushups, pullups, and the like are all great for overall physical fitness, strength and building endurace and..Lifting weights give you the ability to Isolate and work on a particular area of need allowing you to break your workout down and hit particular muscles with a greater intensity. I think its important to use both your normal PT routine, combined with weights and running to create the maximum desired effect and maximum perfromance from your body. I mean, really its all about bettering yourself.

burner 1 good reply, i will suggest a couple of exercises that will help cfog3291 gain overall power and conditioning at the same time. i reccomend military presses to be done with moderate agression, not to slow or to fast. also do power cleans, this is probly the best exercise anyone can do, this will develope power with speed and develope body mass if performed for a period of time with the advancement of reps and sets. element out.

cfog, you've got a lot of good info at your fingertips here. My suggestion would be to read up on different exercises/work out routines, and pick one that suits your goals in the long run. You have to look at this as a whole body training regimine, not just certain excercises. You're adopting a lifestyle that will benefit you the rest of your life, learn as much as you can.

If you're 14 and 5'8" 135 lbs now, figure you'll be @ 5' 10 175 lbs (give or take a lot, depending on your training goals) in good shape at 18. Keep running, work on your swimming, get as strong as possible but make running and bodyweight excercises your primary goal for at least the last year before you come to BUD/S, that should put you in phenominal shape at your entry date. You can get an amazing amount of information from magazines quickly if you dig through the hype.

Bodybuilding mags, although they may not be your end goal, have great work out techniques and nutrition ideas that will get your mind thinking in the right direction. You've got plenty of time, make the most of it and get educated on the best path for you to achieve your goals.
