My son was at Great Lakes right up until about a week before indoc. About 2.5 months doing SCRUFT duty before he left for BUD/s.
In Great Lakes they spent the majority of their time in the pool, and training for BUD/s. I understand if you SCRUFT in California it is different. You work most of the day and have to PT on your own time.
During your wait time you'll be a SCRUFT somewhere. I am not sure if you get to pick your spot or not. But, based what my son told me, at least when he went through, Great Lakes is the place you want to spend it.

Thanks courntey. I got it here in great lakes for a month and a half then i go out there for 2 months so i hope i do more out there then just work a little pt would be nice. Scruff or Scruft or how ever its spelled is what you become while on hold. You work out and do gurilla walks or bear crawls cant remember what there called but eitherway you do them all day long basically get down on your hands and toes and start moving had to do them for a half mile one day.
I am not sure if you get to pick your spot or not.
Between A school and BUD/s my son had a 2.5 month SCRUFT duty station. It was a hospital........ with dependants. NO, he did not pick his spot. He was miserable(son is not big on "bedside mannorBwahaha). He did have to PT on his own time,(read: by himself).

o ok thank you for telling me
Anthony,
We didn't answer your question. To the best of my knowledge SCRUFT(and I'm not sure of the acronym, if there is one) duty is hangin out time. In the Army we used to call them holding companies. Depending on your rate, you are "marking time" waiting for your slot. The duty is usually not demanding and boring to most kids anxious to get to BUD/s. It is easy to "fall off the wagon".(quit PT'ing, get to drinkin too much, etc), you have to maintain focus.

so my SCURF will probably be longer than most because my rating is a GM (Gunners Mate) and apparently it is a well manned rate?

Sweet god. Negative, what he means is that depending on when you get out of A school, depending on your rate, you will have some time until you get to BUD/S. That has nothing to do with how well manned a rate is. Thats what I got from it.

LOL@ "Sweet God. Negative".
BUD/s classes only start so many times per year. You don't get your orders to BUD/s until you are almost through with your A school, in all probability, there will be a period of time between the time you finish A school, and the BUD/s class you are assigned to actually starts.
For instance, in my son's case he finished A school at the end of June. His A school class got split into 2 different BUD/s classes. Some went to the one which started Indoc in July, so had basically no wait. And some went to the one which started Indoc in early September, a little over 2 months wait.
That wait time is when you are assigned SCRUFT duty.
