I am currently a freshman involved in Naval ROTC on the east coast. A few of the guys from our unit went straight to BUD/S after their commissioning, but the competition for officer slots is obviously intense. One of the main factors of their selection just to attend BUD/S was their performance in mini-BUD/S, which is a summer cruise option for those wanting to go into SpecWar when they hit the fleet.

My concern is that mini-BUD/S is so selective as well (last time I checked, there are about 30 slots open to the Naval Academy, and 30 slots open to the rest of the nation's NROTC programs). I belive that I would perform well there (I know, everyone thinks they'll do well), but I would like to know what I can do to improve my chances of getting selected. I've got a good GPA in engineering, I play rugby, I'm improving my PT, and I'm pretty active within my unit. I'd love any suggestions as to what I could do, or what the evaluators are looking for specifically.

Also, I'm part of the Semper Fidelis society, not intending to be a marine, but to get some combat preparation. I'm not on scholarship yet (I joined halfway through last semester) so I can't go on a cruise this summer. Would the Marine Corps Platoon Leader's Class be worth going to? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Where are you at school?

Personally I think PTing with the Corps guys is a good idea. Tactics won't be the same, but learning how to work in the field and all is good. Especially because you're going to be trying for an officer slot. Just remember the tactics and stuff will be different.

Good call. I was just asking if there was anything specific I might not have thought of. I guess I'll just have to be an all around arse-kicker. And I'm at Boston University.

BU huh?

Thats awesome. Hung out with some BU NROTCers out in San Diego. Still pretty good friends with one of your upperclass. I won't say her name over this deal but her first name begins with and S and her last name begins with a T.

My ship was in Boston for three days this summer and I stayed with her and some friends. You Bostonians know how to have a good time. TOTAL SENSORY OVERLOAD! I still hate Boston though. Good luck with your stuff and if you know who I'm talking about, tell her Eli said hi and really freak her out. Take care and good luck with your stuff.
